I have a 47 JD-B Im having trouble with gas getting through the carberator. I completly disasembled it, soaked it in cleaner, drilled out the idle pasages, set the float, has good flow out of the fuel line, it is a DTLX-52 carberator. Has a compleate tune up, points, valve adjustment, plugs, wires, air bath steamed out, has 90 psi compression in both cylinders, The carberator was varnished up pretty bad. Blew compressed air through all pasages. It will run but it is rough and at idle it runs very lean, no smoke. Manifold gasket is ok. Can not get it to run rich at a idle with the idle screw. Any sugestions?

Thanks!!

Hi Dave, as the old saying goes, I been there, done that, and got the T Shirt lol. First of all, compressed air or MIG welding wire or soaking and boiling till the cows come home will not necessarily get all the passages clean. If you drill out (I use the #40 and #53 long drill bits from Robert Beaver) all the passages and she still wont idle properly and adjustign the idle needle doesnt seem to make much difference, here are other things to consider. Are there any vacuum leaks like around the throttle shaft bushing??? (vacuum leak equals too lean mixture) Does spraying WD40 in that area smooth her out?? If you instaleld new bushings, are they as deep in the bore as possible just to not interfere with the throttle plate?? Did you also remove the nozzle and are its holes all clean and it has some clearance (though very little) between it and the carbs bore?? Does a slight choking improve the idle?? I still suspect a clogged passage but try these thigns and post back and clooney can e mail or the Beaver web site I think has diagrams that may help. Let us know, Ol John Nordhoff in Indiana

For what its worth, I find MIG wire to be too big. I like to pull a single wire out of a wooden handled welder's wire brush with a pair of pliers. Very easy to do and its a super fine, high strength wire made to order for fine hole probing and cleaning. Good on down to 5hp Honda size idle holes too. Put her in the sun where you got some good light and get every hole - has always worked for me.

Dave, you probably missed an idle hole. There are a couple of hidden holes that aren't shown in most books & how to's. If you send me your E-Mail address I will send you a carb cleaning diagram I drew up a few years ago..... ..
