I've been flushing my tranny out on my 51 B with 80w90 GL-5 gear oil. Filling it, running it, and then draining it out. I finally found some GL-1 90w to buy, (says mineral oil on the bottle?). My question is that I've heard that the GL-5 oil can hurt parts of the transmission, is this true?, and is there a modern oil for my 51 B other than the GL-5 rated stuff that is ok to use?

My transmission is quiet and works great, it just got alot of water in it over the years. I believe the books call for straight 90w gear oil.

Still waiting on those manuals...MH

Moto Head, you can use about anything in those old Deere's. The GL-5 has a fair amount of EP additive in it & that can be hard on bronze parts if allowed to sit for extended periods. Not a big problem in the 51-B though. The GL-1-90 weight is probably a little closer to the original Deere spec. If you want a modern gear oil try to find a GL-4 as it has the modern oil formula with less EP in it. In any case use a straight 90 weight, the 80W90 is an energy oil & is thinner & made for modern applications. The 90 weight is a thicker base oil. The GL-1 will stick to the gears better & can reduce gear noise but doesn't handle water as well as the GL-4, GL-5 oils. The GL- 4, GL-5 is better flowing in cold weather but tends to leak easier in warm weather. The B's 1st reduction gears run in motor oil from the engine so 1st reduction gear noise isn't effected by the gear oil & the stickier GL-1 won't help in that area on a "B"..... ..
