What does a it mean when a tractor has a brass serial number tag? Does it mean early production or something else?

Also, when were brass carbs used on unstyled A's.

Thanks!

I think it is just people trying to make there tractors sound more important. Don't get me wrong. I'm not cutting on anyone. But I don't go around saying I have a steel tag A and B.

I read an article once in one of the JD magazines that a brass tag meant nothing. You always see ads saying brass tag B or A as though it is suppose to be worth more. It's NOT!

You got it. A tag is a tag is a tag.

I don't think a brass tag means anything at all. I have a 1955 Model 70 with a brass tag. Nothing special about it.

I know the first unstyled As had brass carbs on them. I have a 1934 which is the first production year John Deere made the A. I believe the number on the carb is DLTX-8. I'm not sure when they switched over though.

As for the serial number on the tractor, all of the 34As and I know at least some of the '35s were brass tags but once again, don't know when this changed to aluminum tags.

35--38 B's were unstyled, but I'm pretty sure that only the 1935's rec'd a brass tag serial #
