I have a 4020 gas that seems to run extremely rich. Black smoke, heavy black soot on all spark plugs, seems worse when fully warmed up, not so bad when pulling hard. Had the local dealer rebuild the carburetor (Zenith) and made no difference. Checked timing, air filter and pipes. Screw on carburetor (only one, not two as manual shows) doesn't seem to have any effect. Any suggestions?

I have a 1966 3020 with this exact same problem.
It has the Marval-S. USX36 carb. I have not rebuilt it yet, but was thinking about it. In a parts catalog I have you can get an entire new reconditioned carb for around 250-300 so not sure I would spend alot at the dealer having them rebuild it. I also saw in a manual somewhere that the float position needs to be set correctly.
The idea was to mark the max and min on the side of the bowl then set the float to shut off the gaa at the mid-point. I think I will try this before rebuilding. Good Luck. If you get it solved please post as I would be interested in the outcome.

How far did your dealer go with the overhaul? I had a 4020 gas that did the same thing. The dealer installed a new carb "kit" and the problems continued. He finally had to replace a throttle and choke shafts as they were worn and replaced the float. The cost was well over $200 (ten years ago) but the difference was night and day. Plug fouling and black smoke stopped immediately.

You might try going to one of the old 'marvelous'..Marvel-Shreibler carbs...or check this site for possible advantages over the Zenith brand.
