I can't get rid of the gear noise in my 520. I went to the dealer and he said the first reduction gear can be noisy in that tractor: Has anyone heard of this? He said maybe taking the temper out of the gear would help it. It only does it under a load. Thanks in advance.

We had a 520 when I was a kid on the farm. Very loud reduction gear noise. We tryed 140W oil and helped very little.

Cliff, yes, I have seen that on a lot of 520-530's. [probably worse in 6th gear]. It seems to be different things on different tractors but on many I have seen it is the gear tooth crown on the load side of the pulley gear & 1st reduction gear worn flat. Sometimes 140 weight GL-1 gear oil will help a little but usually won't get rid of the noise. Make sure the pulley isn't too loose on the crank & the outer drive shaft bearing isn't worn, or the 1st reduction cover bearing hole worn oblong..
