I'm trying to figure out just what model this John Deere is. the tractor has a 6 cylinder engine and runs on LP. it has a cat. 2 - 3 point hitch.
The LP tank has a date of 1966 on it. I'm assuming it is factory installed.

Definitely an early (below serial #201,000) 4020 LP. The single-wheel front makes it rather odd duck, as I don't believe I've seen one like that before. The LP also makes it kind of a rarity, at least in these parts - maybe they're more common down south. Are you considering purchasing it?

No I'm not considering it. I just spotted it near my home for sale and I do have a friend out of town thinking about it.
This tractor definately needs alot of work, but the engine doesn't smoke!

1966 sounds like 4020

It's a 4020, if somebody tells you its a 4010 there wrong, the pto lever is on the shifter side(right side as you're sitting in the seat). This tractor could be as new as a 1968.

Ok, now we know what model it is. Where would the serial # be located?
Thanks for the help

Zonie,
It is a 4020 and the Serial number should be on the rear of the transmission case just above and to the right of the pto shaft. Another way to tell a 4020 from a 4010 is that the pto on a 4010 has 3 bolts that have to be removed to change shafts, the 4020 has a snap ring holding it in. 4010's and 4020's also have different hyd breakaway couplers as well. I know them when I see them but can't really think of how to describe them.
