I got new plugs this morning because I thought that was the issue for my stuttering B. It did the same thing after adding new AC C88L plugs.
- There is good flow out both holes above te sediment bowl. There seems to be a good stream out the bottom of the carb drain (almost pencil sized for as long as I want it to run).
I took the top off the strainer on the side of the carb. There was nothing at all in the screen and gas runs out well from the lower drain plug on the strainer.
- For giggles, I drained the gas tank and added 2 1/2 gallons of fresh gas.
Still starts very hard and then sputters now and then like it is starving for fuel - both at idel and full throttle (very inconsistent).
- I took off the carb (I think it says DLTX 13 on the bottom; hard to read). Inlet/outlet looks clean, not gummy.
- I took off the big nut on the bottom and there was quite a bit of rust particles inside the nut and around the bottom of the spring. FLoat seems to move OK.
- Is my next move to start taking the carb apart to clean? Or would I be better off sending it out for cleaning. I hate to pay for that kind of service if I am over looking something else. I'm running out of ideas...Thank you very much in advance.

Dear Popper, Ive been under the weather a bit and forget what we did for you before, and since some fuel problems were covered below, I will discuss ignition. I forget if youre running a mag or delco battery powered distributor???? Regardless of which, pull the cap and check for cracks or carbon paths. Then, inspect the points for oxidation (light gray coating) or pitting or corrosion and either lightly (not too abrasive)clean or replace them and check the gap on both cam lobes. Remove the plugs and with their wires still attached to them and them laying up against the frame, crank her over and see if you have a good blue spark across each plug gap. If only at one, reverse the wires and see if one of them is a problem. If you have a good blue spark at each plug, then check out the carb per the post below. I set my load and power needles at 1 3/4 to 2 on idle and 3/4 to 1 on load and then tweak them in after running by opening them at idle (for idle jet) or full throttle (power jet) until she black smokes out the stack and then back in 1/4 turn or so. That gets you fairly close, but then if you can get her under a load like a baker fan or pto load, you can finally adjust them correctly. If you have a good blue spark and adjusting the carb per above doesnt cure it, post back and tell us how it acts. If the carb has any passages clogged, soaking or boiling it probably wotn cure it until you remove and completely disassemble it and clean and drill out all the passages. Good Luck, Ol John T

Thanks, I will start looking at spark tonight. I have cleaned the idle passages in the Carb. I haven't tried getting the main nozzle out yet (pretty stuck). I may put the carb back on and do some ignition testing before I rip into the nozzle. It had sat for about 20 minutes at half throttle in a light misting rain before this random stuttering started. There is absolutely no pattern to when it starts to stutter. I've drained/replaced all gas and replaced the oil in the breather cup (there didn't appear to be any water in it), replaced plugs, regular "pencil sized stream" at carb drain, no junk in screen strainer. I'll hopefully post back tonight with more results. Need to look at ignition more closely.
Hope you feel better.
Thanks again for your thoughts.

Pa_popper, if you have a good flow of fuel out of the carb drain then fuel flow isn't your problem. You could still have an ignition problem or carb problem. ~First thing to try is re-setting the carb needles & work from there. Set the idle mixture screw to 2 turns out from seated & the load screw to 1 turn out from seated. Once warm, see how it runs when set there, then try adjusting the idle mixture for best idle & adjust the load screw when pulling a load or climbing a hill in high gear. [setting the load screw at full throttle when sitting still with no engine load usually leaves it incorrectly set].
~If it still acts up after the above, see if running with the choke partially on helps, if so you probably have carb problems, if not then look at the points cap/rotor, plug wires, or valve adjustment.
~If you think your problem is in the carb, [& due to the fact it started suddenly] you can try a non-intrusive carb overhaul...Remove the air inlet elbow from the carb, then start the tractor & warm it up, then go to wide open throttle & while it is running fast, place your hand over the carb air intake & let the engine almost stall, do this a few times & then put it under load & see if it clears up [by placing your hand over the carb intake you force the engine vacuum to pull fuel back through the air bleeds & idle air passages hopefully dislodging any dirt or gum]. If that doesn't work try removing the main nozzle from the main well [the brass tube above the spring] & clean all the little holes in it. If you still have a problem, post back or E-Mail & I will send you a carb cleaning picture showing the internal passages & holes that need cleaning.
