Looking for any tips from anyone with expierence with LP tractors. On my 420 TLP, I start it on vapor then when temp. comes up I switch to liquid. It will idle slow when cold, but when the temp. comes up, it starts to idle faster, what causes this? The engine is rebuilt, valve job, lp valves new, solenoid-strainer clean, converter clean. New plugs, points, condenser, wires, ect.New gas in tank. Thanks.

I would say you have a small hole in the diaphram and it is not reading the vacuum correctly. Parts are available for the Impco regs.

My tractor is diesel but I have a 3/4 ton GNC p/u & 1 ton Chev. van both 350s and both on LP. The trick is to set the RPMs when it is at operating temp. Than use a trortle to increase the revs when cold. Here in Akaska I have learned that I need to let them worn up 5 to 15 min. before going any where. I would sugest starting and running in the liquid mode. No eng. can run on liquid LP the converter flashes the liquid off to vapor before it gets to the carb. I like my LP trucks and wouldn't switch back for any thing. Look to the carb for the fix. I have noticed that I had to figure out how it best starts and runs becouse each one seems to be differant.

Wayne, I'm not an LP expert by any means, having only worked on a few LP New Gens here in the shop, rebuilding converters and such, but maybe I can help you some. How much faster does it run when warm than cold? Is it significantly faster, like several hundred RPM, or just a little faster? I'm sure you're aware that pretty much any engine will speed up as it warms up, due to the oil getting thinner and all the internal parts coming to their normal operating temps. Some speed up more than others, so that's pretty subjective, though. It might also be that you're simply getting a richer mixture when running on liquid, which is allowing the engine to run faster. Depending on how cold it is, the tank pressure might be low enough that what vapor you're getting is keeping the engine at a leaner mixture somehow. The New Holland dealership I worked at had a 4020 LP yard tractor, and it seems to me that it would act about like what you're describing, so maybe it's just a normal LP thing. Those would be my theories, fow whatever they're worth.

Gman, it speeds up significantly, about another 300 rpms, and opening and closing the throttle lever does not help. Also you can put it in gear and hold the brakes and choke it down to a normal idle but it will speed back up, after letting off the brakes. One thing I have noticed is the load needle adjustment on the carb. It adjusts like the gas models--open throttle to wide open, then turn it in until it sputters, then open one turn. BUT, mine will screw all the way in tight and still not sputter at wide open throttle. So I have just left it turned all the way in. Also the converter that is on it, does not have an idle adjustment, like the one on my 430. I think the 430 is an original converter but the 420 may have been replaced, it is a Jimco or Imco- something like that.
