My father has a 630 and the starter went out recently. In fact, it went out just after he put the New Idea corn picker on it this fall, so he just parked on a hill instead of taking the picker off to repair the starter. I was just wondering why that starter costs almost $500 for a rebuilt one? He had his rebuilt now at a local starter/generator place (new armature, bushings, and brushes) for $235 and it now works better than it has for years, but I was just wondering what makes that starter so expensive? Many starters you can buy for only a little over $100.

Dan, I sure agree especially when Ive had to look for a JD diesel starter in the past wowwwww ww. The reasons why they are so salty, in my opinion, are: 1) Those starters have to produce a lot more torque, than say an auto type starter, and that means they contain a lot more copper (field and armature windings)which is very expensive, plus bigger bearings, bushings, drives and cases. 2) Supply & Demand and cost of smaller manufactured lots, since they dont make and sell near as many as auto type starters. 3) Youre also paying a lot for the John Deere Brand as their fat corporate and dealership system has overhead to pay and pass on to us consumers. I do as much of my own repair as I can, and often a starter shop can get you fields or armatures or brushes etc cheaper than JD. Ol John T Nordhoff
