Engine turning tool

My JD manual calls for the use of a turning tool to set #1 on TDC (on the 4cyl 219 ci diesel). Has anyone ever used this tool, or is there another way? Turning from the front is out (Hydraulic pump), using a screwdriver on ring gear thru starter hole has crossed my mind, but I'm on an unlucky streak, probably break the teeth. If anyone has this tool, how much from JD? or any other suggestions. Thanks

I could of used one for timing a skidder today but we were able to use a pipe wrench on the drive shaft for the winch. I remember using one when I worked in JD shop, its just like a little starter drive that you put a rachet on.

Engage the PTO and put it in neutral and turn the PTO with a pipe wrench. This works fine on the Dubuques and I think it will work on others unless the engine is huge or very high compression.

Sounds like its in a 410 or similar backhoe. There should be a timing pin and access hole on the left side of the engine. A large screwdriver will work through the access hole there. Also if the radiator is removed, a pipe wrench will work on the pump drive. This sounds a bit crude but it works and is cheaper than a Deere specialty tool.

Having the proper tool is really a bonus in this situation, and other methods of engine rotation just don't work nearly as well. I don't know what the tool lists for, but it's not something you're going to need very often, so I don't know if you want to purchase it or not. If you're on good terms with your local Deere dealer, they would probably let you borrow one. If they won't loan you one, they can give you a price and order one for you. It also might be available through Snap-On and Mac, as they have pretty extensive tool selections for that type of thing.

I know this won't help you but a 7520 and i'm assuming other JD engines of the 531&619 series have this built into the block on the right side. Has a hex head with a light spring between it and the block & i'm also assuming a starter type gear to engage the ring gear. In use place a socket on it push in & turn, works beautifully!
