I have recently had an old tractor given to me. I have only seen one pic but it seems to be a JD. 40U. I have to haul it over 1500 mi. Can anyone tell me what the approximate weight is? I'd hate to get there and find out I don't have enough trailer. Thanks in advance.

Thanx for all the info Guys. I have a 20' tandem trailer with 6000# axles and all 4 have brakes.
I'm pulling it with a "Light 3/4" Chevy, so it looks like I should be fine over the spectrum. I'll post some pics as soon as "I Git 'er home" Thanx again, and Happy New Year! Jon

I hauled my 420U home on a borrowed trailer with no brakes, a distance of abour 50 miles. I had a short bed 1/2 ton Chevy 4x4 at the time and ir went OK. Rear tires are loaded and front wheels have weights on them. My guess is closer to the 4,500 pound area, but most of that difference is in the loaded tires.

At the time I picked up my 420 Wout of central MO, I rented a car hauler from U-Haul - had to tell them I was hauling a car hehe.

It had impulse brakes. It was a no load deal behind a 250 ford with power stroke. I think you could drag one easy with a 1/2 ton and V 8 is long as you didn't get in a hurry up the mountains. However, I can't remember when I trailered any kind of a load without trailer brakes.

40U; Digger and Henry win the bet at 2850lbs no extras per JD Tractor Data Book Pg 96. You may
be able to link up with a freight hauler via the internet if you have other priorities on the farm front.

I have a 1954 40-S.....no fluid in tires.....no wheel weights..... .no operator, which was weighed on two different scales. One scale was 3030 lbs. and another scale it weighed 3070 lbs. Some of the difference might be how full the gas tank was each time.

Larry & Henry, et.al.---

I took my 4500 lb figure from the usually reliable writings of J.R. Hobbs. Actually, its from a table that J.R.s book presents that may well be a John Deere item, from its appearance.

Ive always been curious that the owners manual figures were often notoriously conservative. Another example of this is the Model 70 which the owners manual presents as weighing 6000- 6200 lbs., depending on front end choice. Real live 70 RCs, in the field, including my own wide front, row crop gasser run between 7000 and 8000 lbs. when they step on the scales.

Obviously, on the 40 that we were discussing, two hundred pounds of fluids and a two hundred pound operator do not bridge the gap between the owners manual figures and the ready to plow weights. Tire loading and/or wheel weights and accessories may bring the figures closer but not entirely square.

Id like to hear from Wayne in Tenn and others that run Dubuques to see if they have actually weighed their 40s in their work clothes. I dont mean to present this as Im right and youre wrong, but to question this fairly significant discrepancy.

Whatever the arrived at figure, I still maintain that Jon would do well to consider adding in a safety factor when he plans his trip to bring his new toy home.

Jon---

A wet Model 40 weighs in at about 4500 lbs. Id add a at least 10 percent fudge factor.

Dont forget to add the weight of your trailer when assessing the capacity of your tow vehicle.

Good Luck! Post a picture your tractor when you get it home.
