After breaking the original resistor in the Wico XB, I hooked up the old resistor with some jumper leads. I got the tractor running and checked the voltage into the dist, after the resistor (12v down to 9v). Then I removed the old resistor and wired in the automotive ballast resistor I had and checked it again (12v down to 9/9.5v). Now I believe I have it back to where I started, the pionts still look good, and no dreaded smoke yet.
For now I plan to leave it in this state. It has evedently been running like this for some time anyhow. One time I got it down to 5v and it wouldn't start or run?

I just want to thank everybody for all the input the past few days. It was very helpful and educational, but I'm all Wico'd out for now...MH

Moto Head, you might have discovered the best information so far. If it won't run at 5 volts [that is about where a 6 volt XB coil runs]. You probably have the 12 volt non-externally resisted] coil in it. While I haven't ever measured the coil running voltage of a 12 volt [non externally resisted kit distributor] I would guess it to be around 8-9 volts. If it is the 12 volt coil [a good probability since it has run at 12 volts for a while without frying] use due care & caution when working on it as I don't believe that coil is available anymore.

Moto, it will run fine for a while if youre running to much current through the points and that Wico coil, but the points will burn out prematurely and too much heat can eventaully damage the coil. I STILL SAY keep adding external series ballast resistance until you get that input voltage down to 6 to 7 settign and no more than 8.5 at fast throttle and warmed up with the generator working. HOWEVER, if it was designed for 6 volts INCLUDING that internal ballast that was destroyed, thats to much voltage still at the input!!!!! !!!!! !! in which case the points wont last as long and the coil is gonna run hotter than designed for. Thats my final story and Im stickin to it. Ol John T Nordhoff

Moto Head,
Not to beat a dead horse - but you may want to recheck that voltage level when you get the charging system working.

I'm working on that now, so I 'll probably get back to the Wico afterwards.
