Dust in the MT

We pulled the battery box and the cut-out relay to gain access to the wiring inside the casting on which the guages and steering wheel are mounted. Man, what a dust catcher! There must have been 50 years of dust in that housing; it was level to the bottom of the cut-out. Question is were there ever any plates or covers for the openings in the upper part of this piece; I did notice a couple of screws that seem to have no purpose near the openings. We're taking her apart real slowly in this area as we are trying to decipher somebody's old rewiring job. Very little insulation left on any wires.

There is/was a plate onto which the generator cutout was mounted. If the cutout died, the replacement didn't include the shield. Dealing with a "homebrew" wiring job can be solved (I'm told by JD fans) getting a whole new harness from your green machine dealer. Don't have the Part # but will get it if you like. I use my M for cultivating (it's been on the job since '50) and need to fix the wiring as there's very little left to "cobble." Good luck.
