I have a 1940 H recently overhauled with aluminum pistons.....head redone with new seats and valve guides. Starts and runs great, but idles too fast. What must be done (listed by importance) to get it to idle real slow. Thank you Rich

set the govenor back or put more threads on govenor to get it right. FLoat may have pinhole in carborator, but I would start on the govenor.

Rich, first thing you will probably have to do is bend the idle stop pin as that is probably keeping the throttle plate from closing far enough. Then if it still won't idle slow enough replace the throttle shaft bushings & maybe the shaft if there is wear there, then replace the throttle plate if it is worn & letting air by-pass the throttle plate.
~Once the carb & throttle plate is under control, if it still won't idle slow enough you might want to look for a vacuum leak, worn intake valve guides, or incorrect ignition timing.

Thanks Clooney, after we get through the holidays (have to pull the grandkids around on their sleds) I'll get into the carb. Which way to go on the timing and how much? Thanks again Rich

Rich, you want the impulse lag & running timing to be at stock settings to start with then to get it to idle down lower, retard the running timing a little but don't retard the lag setting. Do that ONLY if you can't get it lower with the carb work. If you have to mess with the timing let us know what mag you have so we can give you the correct lag angle & running settings in the mag.

Check the cotter pin on the throlde shaft and linkage to gov. Make sure it is free. The cotter pin can bind on carb or linkage be rubbing some place.Maybe the holes are not square with pins.
