Any Ideas on Replacing the Slant Steer 420 Steering Shaft U Joint ?

I am on the hunt for a substitute Joint to cut and paste into the steering shaft of the 58 420. The hottest lead I had was the spicer 1000 series but it turns out that the turning clearance that the knuckles require is 2 1/4 inch. This would require too much removal of dash material to make it work. Also been to Truck repair garages. No luck on anything that will fit in the small place and also allow the shaft to clear the gas tank.

Has anybody out there found the magic replacement solution? If so Please let me know. I think I will dig in a nearby auto salvage yard tomorrow and measure up the old auto steering knuckles.

The trouble with the slant steer 420 is the small diameter joint necessary . The 430 went to a larger diameter. It sounds hard to beat the universal socket solution. A machine shop could weld up the original holes and rebore but this might rival new expense. I have seen small u-joints in street rod steering so you might ask around there.

Thanks for all the input folks. I opted for the 1/2" drive universal. Hope the correct police don't notice the chrome under the hood (hehe). The work will be done at a machine shop and you know how slow things can get in the barn when there is no heat in the winter. I will post back when it it reassembled. Merry Christmas!

There are three pages of U-joints of all sizes at McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com), pg. 1009-11. The smallest is only 3/16" diameter! Click on Universal Joints in the Power Transmission index. Would any of these be appropriate? Some are a little pricey but nowhere near $300 from JD...

I have the same problem with my 420T but haven't looked into it yet.

I pondered over the same thing a couple years ago. All of a sudden the lightbulb came on and I chased down a MAC Tools truck and bought a 1/2" drive universal joint. Welded the correct ends to the new U-joint, installed it, and it's been working fine ever since.

I don't know how small this ujoint is but you might check out Surplus Center in Lincoln Nebr. 1 800 488 3407 They will send you a catalog. The 2002 issue has a couple small driveshafts on page 15 that might be a posibility. Just a thought.

I don't remember where I read it, but, someone used a u-joint from a 1/2 or 3/4 drive socket set. Hope this helps.

Henry J. just recieved your e-mail. I know that I have seen some tiny u-joints somewhere. What about something from a lawn mower or go-cart or garden equipment? Also whatever we find does not need to have any plastic in the joint, since we are going to be welding onto it. Maybe someone else will come up with ideas. What about it Clooney, John T. Todd, or any of you guys?

Some places I have seen and maybe even purchased some small shaft U Joints are medium duty truck bed and hoist dealers where they are used on the PTO shafts for the hydraulic pumps that drive off the sides of the truck transmissions. John T

Wayne, last time I put a steering u-joint in a slant steer I used the Deere part. That was about 9 or 10 years a go. I have a few mid 80's GM steering intermediate shafts hanging on my shop wall & keep looking at those & thinking they would fit with a little cutting & welding, maybe just use the 2 outer joint couplings with the center shaft removed & one u-joint. Looks like it would work good on the 430 take a little work on the 420.
~If you guys get something figured out that is a good replacement let us know?
