I have a 1951 John Deere R. All of the R's I've seen have the typical 1940's A type breather. Mine however, does not. I'm thinkin the breather is off of an 80, 820, or 830. It's the bowl type breather similar to the one on the 80 in the photo adds. Curious about it. Would love to know. Thanks. God bless.

You are correct, the R had a air intake stack like a model A. Yours could have an aftermarket addition, or see the picture...

That is my 80 (almost a year ago). It has a pre cleaner attachment on the stack. That is a John Deere made addition, but they didn't start those until the model 820s or 830s (can't remember). It isn't factory made that way, but a very common addition to 80s I've seen, and I'm sure it would go on your R just as easily.

Good luck with the R!

The type of breather shown in the photo is as after market item for dusty conditions such as in western Kansas.

Thanks guys. I wondered whether it might be some kind of conversion. I think the entire breather was replaced on mine. There are no indications that it was one of the old R breathers simply converted. But the comment about having the change for dusty Kansas conditions makes sense. My R is originally from Kansas. Let me know how I can past a pic of my R on a message and I'll put it on here. Otherwise, I have a pic of the R on the tractor photos. Just look up "trefz" and you can see it. Thanks. God bless.
