Robert, where do you live now? I grew up in that general area of Nebraska. Gurley is north of Sidney, and I lived in Oshkosh and then Chappell, which is about 25 miles east of Sidney. I worked for the New Holland dealership in Sidney a few years back, and I know some people that could probably give you at least a little more information on that dealership. If you'd be interested, email me and I can give you their names.

This discussion about now-defunct tractor dealerships has "got me to thinkin'" (DANGEROUS!)! Maybe what we need is a new categry on ytmag.com that, thru input from members, builds a database of all the old dealerships, complete with an interactive map of the U.S. so that you could go to that dealers' info and both read and contribute to the dealers' history. Just a thought.

That post got me to thinking the exact same thing. I was curious if anyone had ever considered compiling a database of old dealers or putting together a book. It would probably be tremendously difficult, considering how many dealers there were and are. At one time, there was a Deere dealer in pretty much every decent-sized town you came to, and that was true even in my lifetime. It seemed like every 20 miles there was another dealership. Anyway, it would be quite a task to compile a list, considering name and ownership changes over the years and so forth. I wonder if Deere archives has a list tucked away somewhere of former and current dealers.

I have been thinking about the idea of dealer history for a couple years. I started collecting memorabilia from dealerships in my area in Wisconsin and also started compiling a list of dealer names. Pretty much just in my county though. Got the idea from talking to people about my grandfathers dealership that closed in the mid 50's.
