Hi Sam, when Henry is with us at tractor swap meets, he sticks his little finger in one of teh towers and cranks the mag over and FEELS if it fires lol but I hate to get shocked and am too wimpy to use that method, I do more like cloney and usually put a plug wire in a terminal and its output near the case (1/8 to 3/16), snap her over and look for a blue spark. The coupler should be fairly hard to turn over and a disticnct loud snap should be heard as the spring trips over and she fires. If its a soft turn over and not much of a snap, the spark will be non existent or thin yellow. Now, if you cant get a spark out a plug wire terminal yet the snap over is hard to turn and real loud, its possible the cap is bad like cracks or internal carbon paths or the rotor assembly is defective. To test that, remove the cap and rotor and you have to attach a wire to that litte coil output button which is where the little spring on the cap goes. Again, crank her over and the other end of that wire should spark a blue spark at 1/8 to 3/16 away from teh mags steel sides. (Or attatch to case and hold close to output button) The mag fires without a cap and rotor, its job is merely to direct the spark to the plug tower at the right time. If she doesnt produce fire, the first thing I do is check the points for carbon or pitting or burning or that tell tale gray oxidation, and clean them and gap them so they are open 0.015 to 0.017 on high cam lobes. The most often causes of failures are bad points or condensor, a weak or inoperative spring and trip over assembly, a bad condensor, bad coil, and especially check for any wires like to teh points which may be shorted to steel somewhere. If it has the side external kill switch stud, be sure it or any wires going to it are not grounded to the case. A very rusted rotor and/or magnet poles dont help matters either. Good Luck, let us know and post back any more questions. Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Thanks Guys: I used the wire method, as I am to chicken of the shock. Nice spark from about 1/8 to 3/16 inch away from case. Now if you fellows need a nice WICO X, check out e-bay. Pating out complete '48 and '49 "B". Thanks again SAM

Sam, install a piece of wire in the top plug wire tower, then bend it around & within 3/16" of the metal case, then hold the mag in the up right attitude [like it's mounted in the tractor] with the impulse drive cup facing you, then turn the impulse cup to the left [assuming a standard CCW mag]. If the mag is working the drive cup should be hard to turn when it gets to the impulse point & should give a good snap when turned past the impulse stop & give a good blue spark between the wire & case. ~If no impulse snap, look for failed impulse spring, or worn & or rusted impulse parts,,,If a good snap & no spark or yellow spark suspect oxidized points, bad coil, or internal rust. ~Do the above quick test & post back with questions....
