Here is some thing you might check on a mag that will not fire after you replace the points and condensor. And you know the coil is good, and the rotor has plenty on magnet strength. Wipe the bottom of the points off with steel wool ( fine ) and then wipe the base plate with the steel wool. Clean with rubbing alcohol. Reassemble the points in the mag, and wipe the contacts on the points with the alcohol on a Q tip. This removes any oils from the fingers or oils and grease that might have gotten on the points. Then check for fire. Points were not grounding to the mag base before when in the closed position before. Now every thing should work. It did, I got lit up by this mag and did it let me know she was ready to do work.

Hi Spokerd! Had a similar thing happen years ago. Only this was a delco Distributor on my 49 G that became harder and harder to start, til it one day just flat refused. Had other tractors with the same setup, so when points and condenser didn't do the fix, I started swapping parts between tractors to pinpoint the problem. Swapped coils to start with with no success. The one I took off worked good on the other tractor. Swapped condenser thinking the new one might be bad but still nothing. After a few days to think things out, I run a wire from the distributor casing back to the ground post on the battery. What do ya know!!!!! Run like a new one. The tractor had been painted a few years earlier, and the connection between the distributor and govenor housing had gone bad. As is often the problem, bad ground!!!

Sounds great, those mags have a low level of energy to begin with, since all you have to work with is a magnet passing a coil, and if the spring is weak, even less. Therefore, you cant stand to loose any energy whatsoever across a resistive connection. Have fun, Ol John T Nordhoff
