i just purchased a 4010 gas,it is a nice unmolested tractor but smokes bad. however it still has plenty of power and cranks and sounds good. Before i put a wrench on it,i would like to know could i maybe get by with just rings and rod bearings? i know these are gas hogs, but i am hearing impaired and would like the quite.just use to pull 10 ft. mower/ tractor shows 5000 hrs.

Steve the only thing I can tell you to do is chech your Oil consumption. I purchased a 4020 5 years ago that had set for 2 years, and it used about a quart a day when used hard. I imagine it was valve seals that had dried out that was the culprit, but it had some blow by, so after running it for a year, I rebuilt it. I had the carborator rebuilt at the same time, and it was fun, and I have enjoyed the results. It took about 1,700 to replace pistons, jugs, bearings, have the head and carborator rebuilt. My tractor had 4,500 hours on it, and it now has right at 4,900. This tractor only gets about 100 hours a year on it, and unless you run it alot at over 2,000 RPM's Gas consumption isn't that bad. I'd check compression, and if that's not too bad, and if you are able to keep from fouling plugs, run it a while, if not rebuild. At any event have fun with your tractor. Good Luck, Greg H.

what color smoke? and from where.from the exhaust or blow-by tube.with 5000hrs.on it i would think a complete rebuild would be in order.5000 hrs is equal to about 300,000 miles

black smoke usually means to much fuel, which can be caused by low compression.you should probably do a compression test.also make sure the air cleaner is clean.

I think you might just need a carb job has the oil got gas in it there is a load jet on the carb that might just need to be leaned down.

the tractor has not been used in years(except maybe a few start-ups)i drained all the old gas out changed oil&filter. put a sub soil plow on it to get it warmed up.it ran rough iput in new plugs/roints and it runs great.there is no gas getting in oil,no oil in radiator i will try to ajust carb tomorrow and clean air filter.and comp. test/it runs so good i hate to start spending!it looks like soot coming out exhaust.
