my 1955 40t had small amounts of coolant in the oil so i figured it may be a head gasket. i removed the head and noticed the freeze plug or (welch plug) was missing. could this be why it was leaking? or could it possibly be the block near the lower water pipe inlet? the tractor ran perfectly, plenty of power, plenty of oil pressure and etc...the welch plug was suppose to be in a hole right below the inside of the head below the upper water pipe inlets....anyone help please?

Bill that is an expansion plug. If you are getting coolant in the oil, I would take the head to a machine shop for magnafluxing and valve job. There are not many 40 heads that are not cracked, since this model had no water pump, and have been run hot sometime in thier life. Sometimes they crack in the valve seat. The machine shop in my area is real reasonable on this work. I have have cracks repaired and a valve job done for around $75. If you need guides and valves, they are still available from Deere. Also this model does not have valve seals, but you can have your machinist to install the old Chevy umbrella type seals, just for insurance, and they only cost pennies.
