I found a 430 U this past week. The tractor appears to be complete and in restorable condition, but the serial no. tag is missing. Does this affect the value of the tractor? This tractor has been sitting outside for three years. It was said to be running when parked. What would be a ballpark value on this.

Dave

Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't care if you mowed your lawn with goats. Anyway, those finish mowers work great. However, I am one of those guys that don't like tractor tracks all over his lawn/grass. Turf tires would almost eliminate that I suppose. If you are working with smooth terrain like a lawn, one of those Z turn mowers will out do a tractor. They are very maneuverable and fast. It is almost impossible to choke them down. Great for buzzing around a lot of trees. They tend to zip over very soft ground and leave no permanent tracks. Anyway, if you don't cut your lawn with a tractor now that is my two cents. Those Z's will buzz through 3-4 acres and you don't need to crank up another smaller machine to do the close in work. Just a personal preference. Have Fun and may Santa bring you an ole JD!

Dave, the 430 is my favorite, I have 3 of them at present and one 420. First, the missing tag hurts the value a lot. Not if you are going to keep it forever, but if the time comes you want to sell, the serious collectors will not pay its value with the tag missing. However you may find a tag at a salvage yard or you can get a replacement from Deere, but they look awful and are nowhere like the original. As to placing a value on the tractor in it's present condition, that is hard to do. The (U) is somewhat more rare than a (T) or (W). The range is wide--from $700 for a junker to 8-9 grand for a showstopper. I know this is not much help on values, but when one is not running it is very hard to do. One thing you can count on when restoring one is that 2 grand in tires, parts, paint, decals, seats, steering wheel, grilles--is a starting point, not counting any labor.

Wayne, thanks for the reply. I have a couple of other questions that maybe you can answer. My plan was to put a finish mower on the 3 pt to mow with. Seems like we mow more grass each year. Do you consider power steering necessary on a 430? Is live power only on tractors with the 5 speed? Thanks for any information you can give me.

Dave, that tractor would do great with a 3-pt finish mower. Don't think you would need the PS unless with a front loader, however it is always nice. The 5 speed only, had continuous running PTO. And a lot of them came without it. The pto shifter works backward (for in & out) on live and non-live.
