How much weight can I lift with a 3 Pt on an A

Hi
I have a late model A equipped with a 3 point hitch. I would like to use it with a flail or
rotary mower next summer to clip a reasonable level setaside area. I am wondering how
much weight that I can reasonable expect the As hydraulics to lift. This will help me
select what type of mower to purchase. Also any experience others have had doing similar
work would be of interest.

The lack of live PTO and hydraulics for this task isnt a problem.

Thanks in advance
Bill

Bill -IA,

I use an old Continental 6' shredder behind my '50 A with no problems. The one thing you need to remember is that the mower will propell the tractor quite a ways after you disengage the clutch. I'm sure there are lots of stories from guys who learned that the hard way. About 30' of 4 strand barbed wire fence comes to mind..... .....

Hi Terry

I can relate to your story. I mow our pasture with an 8N ford(no live PTO) and a 5' Ford rotary cutter. (the pasture is very hilly) You have to pay attention while you are mowing.

The John Deere is sitting in the shed and goofing off while the Ford is working and this upcomming project looked like I could put it to work.

A 6' mower on the back of an A should not be a problem. Years ago we farmed with several late model A's and they had no problem with a 3 bottom plow on the back or a sprayer filled with 100 gallons of water. We did have front end weights on though to hold the front down.

Thanks Bill

Hmmm 100 gal of water = ~800 lbs, ya, it should be able to lift 800 - 900 lbs.

It gives me more choices...

To Gary, Steve & Gene
Thanks to all of you for your information and insite.

The mowing is a 36 acre field going back to native grass. The mower will be down to mow and only lifted to return to the shed located on the same field. A flail has been recommended for better distribution of the clippings to keep from killing out the seedlings. I have found several finish flails for compact tractors in the 5 - 7 foot range. (my question about the weight) So far the pull type flails I have found have been large, 10' or bigger. Should be some smaller ones out there if I can find them.

Why don't you just get you a good drag type. Lots easier to hook up, you won't have the worries of tearing something up with the lift as mentioned earlier which will give you some peace of mind. Also if the grass is not too big you may be able to go with a wider mower then, possibly up to 8', if the grass is real thick that might be a problem but no where is it written you have to take a full bite with the mower either! Just some thoughts!

Bill,
I use a old tank of a 6 ft. 3 pt bush hog on the back of my 60. I'd guess it at 500 lbs. No problem lifting it. I'd imagine a late A would do the same.

Gene has give you really good adice. Use it to lift as little as possible. Don't use the hydraulics to suspend the mower while you're using it, use the lift arm adjustments or stabilizer chains for support and your rockshaft and hyrdraulics will live a whole lot longer.

Steve

You need to be careful when transporting heavy loads on the 3pt on this tractor, if you hit many bumps with it up, you will either blow the gasket between the power-trol,and/or bust the housing because there is no dash pot type of bounce shock absorber. Translate this into $$$$$$ and/or work!! Saw lots of farmers make this mistake when the 3pts became readily available on these tractors. The answer to this problem ls take it easy with this much lifted load. Gene Davis
