I'm only 41 years old, so i can't remember that day. If you can remember December 7 1941. What where you doing? And what did you think when you got the news?

Did you feel the same way on 9-11?

Well, I was four years old when that happened. If I were smarter, I could probably remember it.

The things I do remember as WW II waged on (we lived just northeast of Indianapolis, IN): There was a town named Germantown (now under the water of Geist Reservoir) nearby - from news reports, I knew the Germans were the enemy. When a plane went over, I was afraid it was the Germans from Germantown. How was I to know?

I remember planes from Stout Field (I think it was an Army Air Corps base near Indianapolis) practicing dogfights in our area.

I remember the day President Roosevelt died (April 12, 1945), but I don't remember the dates of VJ Day and VE Day.

I remember how glad I was when the war was over, as I knew there would be less news on the radio - I was tired of hearing about war.

Why do I remember these things all these years later? They were almost as vivid on the radio as 9/11/01 was on TV - all we had to do was use our imaginations and we could see the devestation.

May we never see another time like either of those days!!

Stan

Another remembrance- one of my friends, Bud, tells me that he and his buddies were riding Harleys that day and learned of the bombing when they got home. Bud enlisted the next week. Bud still can wear the unfiorm in which he was discharged in 1946- and does he look sharp in it!

Being just short of 61 years old, I don't remender the WAR but I remember the BRAVE who came home. Also I have a friend who was on ship in Pearl Habor Dec 7, 1941, the sad part is only he and another remain from that today. I have lots of respect for many Brave people of the Era. May God Bless them and the families who supported them.

Drafting and training of the new inductees continued right up to the signing of the surrenders by Germany and Japan. I do remember when my father received his draft notice and was inducted into the Navy. The link below is to some songs of that time. Everyone was committed to victory. That has not been true in any USA military action since WWII. The songs are in MP3 and are slow to download with dialup ISP. Click on the picture of the label to download.

I was a kid of 7 living on a farm, what I remember was the "vivid descriptions" I heard of the Germans and the Japanese, (can't go into detail and be politically correct), and the attitude that there was no doubt we would surely win the war, it was just a matter of time. Americans really came together after Pearl Harbor, it's an example of why this country is called The United States of America. 9/11 brought out that character again in our people, we may have some differences in some things, but when our way of life is threatened, we unite together. Let's hope and pray that never changes.

My wife's grandfather was delivering newspapers that Sunday morning in Aiea, Hawaii, just up the hill from Pearl Harbor. He at first thought it was a drill until he saw and felt the explosions. As far as Sept. 11, I am a B-52 electronics technician deployed to an "undisclosed forward operating location" helping get some payback. I'm proud to be here, but I had to leave halfway through restoring my '51 JD B. Now I'm really P.O.d!!

I was a little tike, about 4 or 5 yrs old. We didn't have electricity on the farm, but my folks had a big battery powered radio with a big dial light. When the blackouts were on at night they would put a big cardboard over the back of the radio so the dial light wouldn't show through the window near where the radio sat and then they could still listen to the news of the war.

I was coming up on 7 yrs at the time, I do remember 12/07/41 and a map tacked to the kitchen door where we tracked the progress. I do remember VJ day. I was supposed to be tarring the nails on a tar paper roof. I painted "WW II is over" to inform low flying aircraft. There were none. I also remember the thoughts of an Austrian as related to me a few years ago. Supposedly their thoughts on Dec 7, were, "Now we are in for a heap of trouble." The World Trade Center is somewhat different, civilian rather than a military target. Someone summed those up best by saying, "they like killing others better than living themselves". They don't really like fighting however or they would tackle someone other than the crippled, children or women.

I am 38 and a 16 year soldier now in the 101st Airborne Division. My dad was on the farm when Dec 7 happened, plowing up the tobacco patch. He said he remembered thinking he'd better get done the next day or so before the draft notices came. Just a little time later, it came. My dad served in 3d US Army providing Infantry support to Gen Patton's armor. He don't talk much to rest of the kids about what went on over there, but he and I have shared some things he said he'd just as soon forget. On 9 11, I was conducting a Dress Green uniform inspection when our 1st SGT came and told us about the first impact. We all went inside and watched CNN as the second plane impacted, then the third hit the Pentagon. I thought "Life as I know it is over, changed forever." It has. Bin Laden slipped away from us in Tora Bora thanks in no small part to our "Allies" in the region. But, we'll get him, we'll get him alright.

kraig,
My grandfather (who was very close to me) was also under Gen. Patton- I found out after he died that he was a tech supervisor. He never talked about it at all-other than some experiences working on things, so it must have been pretty bad!

Tom,
Your Dad probably helped liberate my Dad from Luftstalig 7 POW camp. Thank you! Wouldn't be around today if it weren't for guys like your Dad coming along to spring guys who had to jump out of shot up B-17's.

From that experience, my Dad taught me that it was better to fly the plane than to jump out of it, but my generation got sent to SE Asia where we flew a heck of a lot more missions with a lot fewer results than they did over Europe in the 40's. The guys running your show seem to be a bit smarter and the mission is a lot more clear now - so hang tough, you'll get that SOB.

I just barely missed the draft. They closed it while I was a sopohmore in college. I wasn't going to volunteer unless it came right down to the wire. Wanted to farm real bad at that point in my life. (Now I just farm real bad.) Thanks to you guys I didn't have to go. My brother-in-law's brother didn't come home. Read a lot of books about it and it does seem that a lot of bad decisions were made there. Thanks scottAR
