I have 2 generators that look identical in every way. 2 brush delco. One came off my 520, wasnt working and another I picked up on a sale, it has a rebuilt tag on it and also says 6 volt. Question- my armature is shorted in 12 volt gen, can I take armature out of it and swap with other? or is it even possible to get one good 12v out of this? Other than volt reg, what else is different? Thanks to Clooney,I got the bushing out the way you said to.

Rod, sure its possible to get one good generaotr from your parts, so long as you have a good field poles and a good non shorted armature. A Generator doest really know what voltage its supposed to put out, its increased if you spin it faster or increase the magnetic field flux density by increasign the current through the field poles. The different armatures will work even though this is not an electrical engineering CORRECT solution. The commutator spacing segements and bars are somewhat different, but the current rating is not that much different which helps the wrong armature stll work probably for a long time. Get it all connected, polarize it, and if it doesnt work post back and we will talk more about it. John T Nordhoff

Rod, there is a difference between the 6 & 12 volt armature but the 6 volt should work if the sizes are exactly the same. The performance might be different & the output slightly less but probably worth a try. The lower 6 volt armature output will be offset somewhat by the faster spinning on the 520. The 6 volt armature will probably have larger diameter wire so it will have less windings than the 12. ~I have been running a 12 volt armature in a 6 volt 720 diesel generator for years without any problems...
