Just replaced two original (1995)twelve volt heavy duty batteries on my International truck with more of the same. I used a Plastikote spray product for future protection. My question is what other products have worked well for other folks? Any home/farm remedies besides bagbalm?

have you tried super gluing a penny near each terminal? Have done so with every battery have had and the copper penny "calls" to the rot to come to it. i change the pennies once a year and have clean terminals. just my home fix. to clean the posts i have used coke brand soda for years as well with a small plastic injector and it eats the corrosion off as well.

I just use grease. Been doing it for several years on tractors and trucks. Make sure you have good clean solid connection first. Then cover it all with grease. Hasn't let me down yet.

After all that has been tried, try the easest of all, DEXRON tranny fluid. It seems to work just fine for me.

Here in tidewater Md. we have the added effects of salt air in the corrosion mix. Around here we use a marine corrosion inhibitor like Boeshield-9 made for use by Boeing Aircraft. Also CRC heavy duty corrosion inhibitor. Both penetrate and seal joints and leave a waxy coating that will not degrade with time.

If the batteries are new, put RTV silicone around the posts to seal them well-most batteries aren't sealed very well at the terminals.
Then coat the terminals with Permatex Gasket Sealant. It works very well. We maintaine 350 pieces of equipment where I work and the Permatex does a great job for us.

I use the red spray also but some batteries still get kinda nasty the cleanest batteries we have found are John deere I think made by Exide Durastart and Cenex are the worst

John, this is a subject I strongly believe in and also practice what I preach. First, I have excellent luck with those felt washers that go underneath and on the posts before you install the battery terminals. Now, if you want to even get better, I then use that red battery terminal spray which gives you double protection. However, even where I used either alone, they both worked great for me. You should always thoroughlly clean and wires brush the battery terminals and connections first. Now, if you dont have or want to use either, coatings of vaseline petroleum jelly or even grease does a decent job after the clean dry terminals are first bolted down tight. The only drawback with that is you dont want grease etc coming in between where you want good metal to metal electrical contact. The coatings helps prevent oxidation by providing a barrier between the corrosive gases and the terminal and air from gettign to whats under the protective coating. If you use any of these preventitive measures (washers and/or spray coat the best), the battery compartment shouldnt need any attention until the battery finally wears out. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff

Hey neighbor --
If vaseline and grease work, then so would bagbalm. I'm enamored of fixes that are already sitting on the shelf in the barn, and John wouldn't need to go out and buy anything for his truck! But we'd better warn him off the temptation of pouring Absorbine linament down the carb or in the crankcase.

Yup, tongue firmly in cheek - happen to be in a jovial mood, as we beat those Terrapins last night. Suppose everybody down there - yourself included - is upbeat as well.

take care,

Steve

Ell-Tron Mfg. Co. manufactures battery terminal covers which is a very inexpensive way to cover and protect terminals from the elements which create the corrosion, as well as guard against accidental rapping with tools, etc., which have been known to cause sparking, fires and explosions!
If you are looking for a place to purchase individual covers such as ours feel free to phone us at 989-983-3181 (or email us at [email protected] )and we will help you out.
Thanks!

For years I have kept and used Bag Balm in our medicine cabinet and its one of the best general purpose ointment/salves Ive ever used and will cure rashes and scrapes and burns better than anythign else Ive tried. Yo Steve, since IU got rid of that egotistical jerk Robert Montgomery Knight, Ive started rootign for them again. Davis is a gentleman and an outspoken unashamed Christian and one fine man. Like the greatest ever, John Wooden, he proves you dont have to be a jerk and *&^%%$# to win. Ol John T

What's more, you only need to go 20-30 miles up SR 37 to see where Wooden grew up in Martinsville. Too bad he went to Purdue. Kidding aside, he was back in Indy a week or two ago. What a guy.

I did my teminals with the plastic spray stuff. I spect I`ll know the results in the years to come. I do thank all of you for your insight and taking the time to respond. No offense to bagbalm intended I assure you, but I had a cow with chapped teats. Real bad, worse I`d ever seen. Everytime I would try to apply the balm she would try to kick the crap outa me. Being as I wanted to save what little crap I had left. I would spray her teats with WD-40 from a safe distance. It softened her up enuf so applying bag balm didnt hurt and I wouldnt get kicked. I expect to be changing out four more batteries in the next couple months. I`m gonna try some of the previous posts suggestions on each one and see which holds up the best. Again Thanks to you all. PS. This is not holesale endorsement for the application of WD-40 on teats. Cow, human or otherwise. Particularly if your shipping milk.

John,
Great idea! You're a scholar and a gentleman. Bet the cows like you, too. When you don't have anymore crap left, you switch to beef cattle. Those short, squat critters can't kick as hard as dairy cattle.

Beef cows dont kick as hard a dairy cows? Sounds like a multi million dollar government grant for a 10 year study is needed here. Id like to offer up some politicians for test subjects.

ha ha ha! You and Frank M and me ought to form some kinda reseach outfit and go after one of those USDA grants. It would keep you in batteries for a long time - the heck with trying to prevent corrosion.

I use a spray called chain and cable lube from N.A.P.A. on mine with fantastic results. It will penetrate in between the cable end and post. I also use this on all of mine equipment and automotive door hinges and latches, does a very good job of lubricating them.

I have used a spray product, I think from 3-M, called spray-a-gasket. It's translucent red, comes in a blue can, stays tacky for a long time, and really works against corrosion. My dad swears by it even though he uses it to excess; a little bit goes a long way.

John,
Funny - bagbalm works on cattle, horses, dogs, and my knee. Why not the battery?

The spray on graphite like stuff you put on plow shares to store them seems to work as well as anything - the main idea being to cover the bare metal so the battery fumes can't get to it.

I've got one tractor with an Optima sealed battery. Doesn't corrode at all. No fumes, but way pricey unless you can find them "holesal" as they say.
