I have a later production 730 gas.(7324731) My friend has an early production 730 gas.(7300286) My shift pattern is different than his. Mine is 2-R, 5,1,3- 4,6 His is 1-R, 3,2,4 5,6. Why are they different? When did JD change the pattern? Are the differences due to different gear speeds? I just wanted to know.

Thanks for any help.

My 730 has R-1-2-3 on one side (left side) and 4-5-6 on the other (right side), I always thought this was the standard and the creaper gear set up was and option. Maybe depends on the area and how the tractors mainly were used. For heavy PTO work I can see you might want the creeper gears, my setup suits me just fine.

David B, you have the optional [special 8 mph 5th gear] & no creeper. Probably in some areas where the 8 mph 5th was used for crop service they were shipped with the optional gear. Or the selling dealer ordered them out that way. The creeper gear was standard unless the optional 8 mph 5th gear was ordered. Deere added that creeper 1st gear due to the many complaints of the [too fast] 1st gear on the 70. Deere also offered a special 4th/6th gear option.
~I like that 8 mph 5th gear but miss the creeper for some tasks.
~That special 5th is actually a bolt on gear that slides on over the standard 1st gear & is held on with 2 bolts through a plate, then a smaller sliding gear is used. ~That also changes the other gears speeds slightly...old 2nd becomes new 1st,,,old 4th becomes new 3rd,,,old 5th becomes new 4th,,, R & 6th stay the same & the new 2nd & 5th are obviously different due to the gear change.
~If you look in the operators manual that came with your tractor it should show the standard shift pattern..

G MONNENS, Deere offered some optional gear sets for the 720-730. The big controller of quadrant & gear lay-out is whether or not it has the optional high speed [8 mph] 5th gear.
~Standard gear set up = 1st in the upper L/H corner with 1, R, 2 & 4 on the L/H side & 3, 5, & 6 on the right.
~Optional 5th gear = 2nd in the upper L/H corner with 2, R, 1, & 3 on the L/H side & 5, 4, & 6 on the right.
~With the optional 5th gear you gain a higher 5th gear but give up the creeper 1st gear.
~Make sure your speeds match the quadrant as I have seen a few with the wrong quadrant on that doesn't match the gear speeds.
