I had ten 5" headlights from JD 70's that needed new gaskets and I checked with JD on prices. They were about $4.00 each. I bought twelve feet of 7/64 widshield washer hose ($4.20) and cut it into ten lengths of 14 7/8" each. Put a drop of super glue ($0.95) on the each of the cut ends and formed it into a circle and butted the ends together for about 30 seconds. It gave a very good bond. I then placed the reflector into the light shell body and placed the gasket around the outside top diameter of the reflector and put a drop of super glue every 90 degrees between the gasket I.D. and the reflector body. The gasket is stuck to the reflector and can be removed with the reflector as one piece. You don't have a problem with the gasket moving when you install the clamping ring. Appears to form a good seal for about 50 cents apiece.

another rubber gasket that last, carb. bowl on my dltx 81 carb was seeping and no new gasket for it, took a rubber gasket from a fuel oil filter for the house furnace, trimmed and fitted, can be taken off and put back on as many times as needed with out worry of leaking.

Clever! Would you be surprised to learn that's exactly the technique used to make custom sized 'O' rings? Cut to size and super glue the ends together. Just a sliver of glue though, no where near a drop.

I made headlight gaskets that way. We had a flat tire on one of our scrapers, and they have a big O ring seal on the rim. I saved one of those and cut and glued it. works great. Our local truck supply store sells bulk O ring, and their "special" glue to hold it together.
