I have a 2240 that is hard to start. I use starting fluid it will start then die, if i keep doing this it will finally start. I do not have electric where this tractor is stored.

Once it starts it will start every time you crank engine.

Anyone have any suggestions?

You might also consider checking the starting system. If your batteries are not fully charged or are weak, you may not be getting adequate cranking speed for proper starting. A dragging or otherwise malfuntioning starter can also cause this problem. Make sure your battery cables are sufficiently sized and that the ends are quality crimp- or solder-on ends, rather than the el cheapo bolt on type. Fully charge the batteries before load testing them, as a discharged battery will not test well, even if it is in otherwise good shape. You might also consider checking the fuel transfer pump, as low fuel pressure to the injection pump can also cause hard starting. Any of the items the other gentlemen mentioned are also good checks to make.

Paul, check inj. pump timing. You didn't state how many hrs. are on it but running time can cause gears in frt. of engine to wear enough to let inj. pump get out of time to cause hard starting. It is like Exlax a little does a lot.You can also wiggle steering wheel from side to side while trying to start this helps releave hyd.pressure.JD also had a manual destroking screw for hyd.pump to help in cold weather.Jim B

Have you tried a fuel additive? An engine compression test would help diagnosis too. Freshen up the injector pump and injectors. Disconnect your front hydraulic pump at the coupling to isolate it. If you have leaks in your Hydraulic, system that pump will make your engine actually start under a lite load.
