Are the tractors with precleaners supposed to be able to get air from the intake pipe in front of the radiator and through the stack? Isn't all of the air intake supposed to come through the stack?
My 730 has the stack and the underhood intake pipe is also open. How much clearance should there be between the top rim of the plastic dust bowl and the lid? Mine only has about 3/8" clearance. Is this right or do I have the wrong dust bowl? Thank you.

Scott:

When you check for that metal can that BLKsmok refered to make sure your pipe is clean. I bought a 730 diesel a year a go and when I was checking out the air cleaner I found a lot of sludge in the area where the can sets. There are 3 holes in there about 1" by 1 1/2" that could be pluged with sludge. Two of mine were pluged solid and the third was over half pluged. These holes are to the back toward the engine. It took me quite a while to dig and wash these openings out. Take your oil cup of the bottom and pour the oil out and set it under the air cleaner. Then get some solvent and brushes and screw driver or two and start washing and digging. Mineral spirits will do for solvent. It may take you some time to get all this cleaned out. The Can looks like a piece of steel tubing with a freeze plug spoted in it and it has a notch cut in one side to expose the rectangular holes. The part # is AF 3236 R and is called an air cleaner bracket tube. Hope this helps.

Scott...there should be a sheet metal "plug", shaped like a four ounce glass that shuts off the air intake from the horn in front of the radiator allowing air to be drawn in only through the precleaner. The plug is beneath the air precleaner upright pipe in the cast iron part it bolts to. The metal cover on the precleaner bowl should seat on the top of the plastic bowl (no gap) when it is tightened down.

Thank you for the reply. To clarify the gap on my bowl, it is not the outer rim that has the gap, but it is the inner small diameter rim . If I put the lid on the bowl and turn it upside down there is about a 3/8" gap from the inner rim to the lid.Is this the correct bowl? Do you know if the air block off plug is available from Deere or do I need to go searching boneyards?? Thanks again.

Scott..that interior diameter gap is normal. It's where the air enters the precleaner pipe after letting the dust collect in the bowl. Let me know you can't locate that plug (part # F-I-T provided). I might have one from a 720D.

Thank you all for your replies.I knew there is supposed to be a gap on the bowl. Just wasn't sure if mine had the right size gap or not.

Scott:

The part you need is AF 3236 R, Tube. I doubt that it is still available, but you never know. If not someone who has one might post the dimensions here for you. Then I think you'll be able to fab one out of muffler pipe stock without too much trouble.
