I have a 52 A Ser#703280 that the generator is not charging. It is already neg. ground and 12 volt. My question is since the gen. is not charging and I know i will need a new voltage reg.,would I be better off having gen. rebuilt or going with an alternator? Thank you in advance. DC

I went with Alternator for mine as its not going to be restored. Around here its a $95 core charge for chevy generators and $95 for rebuilt generator on top of that. And its much more difficult to get core charge back as they insist on testing it at the rebuild house first - if you don't send in one that can be rebuilt e.g. burnt up armature, you don't get your core charge back.

On the other hand, I don't know where JD generators go to get rebuilt, maybe I just need a better parts house.

DC, either a generator rebuild or an alternator will work & it depends on the use of the tractor. ~If you are just building it for play, or parades/ or light work around the farm then the generator will work & is probably the preferred way... If you don't care if it is original & need it in the cold of winter & use it for regular farming, then an alternator will give you faster battery recovery charging, allow more & bigger lights allow many short time usages without battery depletion.

~What is wrong with your generator & regulator? In most cases there isn't anything wrong with them that a cleaning & new wires between the two won't cure. Your present regulator will work in a negative ground configuration in most cases...Let us know if they are on the tractor now & if they are wired in, if so the troubleshooting is easy & you can then determine if a generator or regulator are really needed....

Clooney, Thanks for such a quick response. The gen. is off of the tractor right now. I seen the post you and John T had earlier about the gen. and regs. I tried hooking jumper wires to the gen. to see if it would motor and it wouldn't. I also tried spinning the gen. a putting test light to the A post to see if it was putting out anything and it wasn't. As far as the reg. is concerned it is full of rust and everything is awfully corroded. The tractor hasn't been run for a while. My primary use of this tractor will be for small jobs around the house and mostly playing. Thanks for the response. DC
