My husband has become the proud owner of a JD 630. I would love to surpise him for Christmas by getting an operators manual (or even a service and/or parts manual as well). I'm having a hard time finding original manuals for this model. Is it worth the search (and price) to get "original" manuals, or should I just give up and get copies? Would it matter to you, if you had this ole tractor and your wife wanted to surprise you with this? I need opinions from any of you JD die-hards out there! Thanks so much!
Also, if your opinion is to obtain an original manual, do you have any ideas (besides eBay) where I can find one?!

Just call JD and get the originals. I got a parts manual for my 620. They aren't that expensive. You should have both an operator's manual and a parts manual.

Go with the JD manuals like Mike said. I tried the I&T manual didn't like so I called John Deere and got theirs.

You can get new original service manuals from John Deere at 1-800-522-7448, you will need a credit card and model number (630) of the tracter, and John Deere will ship them to you. Old manuals are nicer in one respect since John Deere made changes during the production of the tractors and the new manuals are the most recent version. The new manuals may not be exactly like the manuals produced the year the tractor was built, but your husband should like the new manuals as a surprise present. I would recommend that you buy the operators, parts, and service manual at a minimum, if you want the complete set then get the power steering, hydraulic, and electrical manuals also(note: all of these will be >$100). There could be one surprise when you order these, there is no service manual for the 620 and may not be one for the 630, John Deere says use the 60 manual for the 620. You could also get an I&T service manual at TSC, this gives an additional service resource if the 630 manual is not available.

Those "New, original" manuals you refer to are currant reprints, or reproductions or copies of the originals. I think that by the word "original" the lady is asking about a manual actually printed in 1959, instead of one printed in 2002, which includes a "currant" style of cover and any new, added wisdom not found in the originals printed in 1959.

I know that John Deere modifies the parts catalogs to include all of the currant parts number updates. An original 1959 parts catalog would be very different than a newly printed copy.

The ORIGINAL, printed in 1959 copy of the owners manual will cost a lot more than the equally functional NEW copy currantly being sold. It's increased value lies entirely in it's "collectability". If it were me, I'd try and get both---a "new" one to use with the tractor (and get grease stains on) and the old one, for a featured place on the bookshelf where visitors can see it.
