JD 2020 won't start. Need schematic of any similar tractor.

We have a John Deere 2020 gas that won't start. Previously, it has been difficult to start. But now it won't start at all. It seems to run when the key is switched to start, but dies when the key is released to the normal run position.

If anybody could email a schematic of a gas JD tractor of around that vintage, I would greatly appreciate it. Or even if you could describe how the starting circuit works, that would be helpful.

Additional notes on starting problems. In the past, when it snows or rains, I turn the key and nothing happens, my hubby has to jump start the tractor using the starter solenoid. Lately, the tractor has been acting up, running poorly, missing when it gets warm. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor which were corroded, and it seemed to run much better. But then today while idling, twice it just stopped running as if someone turned the tractor off. Now it won't start at all, and of course, it died back in the woods and we want to get it out of the woods before the snow flies. Paranoind hubby is threatening to rent a bobcat to get the tractor out of the woods. HELP!

Also, I know there is some wiring on teh ignition related to the neutral switch. Could that be the problem?

from looking at the wiring diag. at the 2020 manual, there is a resistance wire running from the key switch to the coil. this wire allows lower voltage to the coil in the 'run' position of the switch.(engine on).
i guess that the resistance wire can be replaced with a normal wire and an ignition coil resistor.
by the way, the neutral swich ('start safety swich') works on the starter circuit and not on the ignition circuit. the jumper mentioned above, however, should be disconnected with the engine off, to prevent possible 'boiling' of the ign. coil

With all your 2020 problems I think I would just go get a set of manuals from JD! Then you have what you need when you need it.

Right...
At $130 for the shop manual and $60+ for the parts manual, I can send the tractor to the shop. :-)

Seriously, I found an IT shop manual for the 2020 for $17 on amazon.com. I imagine it is a Haynes type manual for tractors. Are those manuals any good?

Run a wire from the positive terminal on the battery to the positive side of the coil (You are bypassing the on position on the key switch.) If the key switch will make the starter run, then it should run. I think you need a key switch.

Thanks all for the great advice!
Thank goodness the tractor is now out of the woods. Hubby put a jumper between the solenoid terminal with the big red wire and the solenoid terminal that goes to the ignition system. It was only reading 5 volts. We started the tractor, removed the jumper and drove it home. He thinks the problem is with the solenoid and just left to buy a new one. We have replaced the starter on the 2020 several times before. We have also replaced the ignition switch once or twice in the past.

The 2020's frail electronics reminds me of Lucas engineering that made electronics for Triumphs. I used to have a Triumph TR4 and it broke down once a month without fail and twice a month if it rained.

See my latest post. We think it is the starter solenoid. Yes, we do park the tractor outside. Shed roof collapsed a couple of years back and we are still in the process of dismantling the shed. I try to cover the tractor with a tarp because it doesn't want to start after it rains or snows.

You Need a new ignition switch. When you turn it to start position the switch lets a full 12 volts go to the coil for easier starting, when it returns to the run position only six volts goes to the coil so the points won't burn up. If it starts while cranking but dies when you release the key it needs a new switch.

Run a jumper wire from the coil direct to the battery terminal that the starter is hooked to. Let hubby carefully do his thing with the starter solenooid, don't let it run overhim if and when it starts. Drive it inside then check over the wiring. Could be the condenser too

Thanks! Sounds dangerous, but worth a try. The jumper would bypass the ignition switch and the safety stuff like the neutral switch.

If we can't get the tractor started, I want to try towing it out of the woods with my Ford Explorer. The last thing I tried to tow with the Explorer was the fuel man's truck that was stuck in the mud. I managed to dig a couple of holes in the driveway, but the fuel truck did not move an inch, so I don't know if I can tow the tractor.

I've got a manual for the 2020 at my office, but only have a fax machine. If you've got a fax number, I can get some of the electrical pages off to you in the morning.

Thanks,
I'll try and get a fax number in the morning. I might have one on my computer, but I have to figure out how to get it to work. I will post in the morning.

Don't know if this will work. Try sending the fax to 763-295-2308 (MN phone number in metro area) on my computer.
