I've got a 720D it starts and runs real nice but when you accelerate the tractor shakes real bad. I took the flywheel off and tightened it up it quieted it up but didn't help with the shake. Any ideas. Thanks Shane

Shane: Do you know the history of this tractor? You posted that you had the flywheel off. Are you sure you have the "V" mark on the flywheel aligned with the mark on the end of the crankshaft? Also, if the clutch has been apart it is possible that someone has put it together without aligning the "V" mark on the clutch drive disc to the mark on the crank shaft. If this happens to be the case, the tractor will vibrate. There are other things that could cause vibrations, but I would start checking the easy things first.

Have you checked the clutch drive disc? Needs to be indexed to the >< marks.

Jmo:

No need to index the clutch drive disk on the 70/720/730 diesels. They use a crankshaft mounted counterweight, so the there is no counter weight built into the clutch parts.

F-I-T & Clooney: I posted above regarding aligning the marks on the clutch drive disc never thinking about the counter weight on the crank. You are 100% correct, but with this said, I do have an old 70D, 720D, 730D manual that says to align the marks when reinstalling. This is not a John Deere manual and they must have goofed. I can see there is no reason to align the marks. It's good someone out there is keeping me straight!!

Plant Doctor:

I don't think there even are any marks to align !

That might delay someone during an install if they are looking for those marks.

Jmo, while that holds true on most old 2-cylinders the 720D isn't one of them, the clutch driver is non directional & doesn't require indexing on the 720D due to the crankshaft being internally balanced...

Shane, does it shake when accelerated with the clutch disengaged? If so your problem is engine related. You could still have flywheel problems [is it STILL tight & indexed correctly], is it staying tight without excessive run out... is the RPM set to specs? maybe it's over revving when accelerated...you could have a bearing that is worn...There is a counter weight on the crankshaft that could be coming loose...If it's shaking under load? maybe you have a misfiring cylinder...you could have a broken piston skirt so it's out of balance...
~There are numerous reasons you could have a shake & all are not a good sign. As '56-720D said you should find the problem before serious & very expensive damage occurs...

Shane, I'm guessing since you didn't give any more detailed info, it could be a connecting rod but you said it idled ok; you didn't mention what gear you were in, it could be in the transmission; anyway, it sounds serious so if it was my tractor I would not use it until you know for sure. You might cause more serious damage by continuing to run it.
