51 G head stud questions

What is the thickness of a cyclone head from factory that has never been shaved? Mine measures 5 3/4" thick through the head stud holes. I am building this tractor to pull and was wanting to shave it 1/4". The only problem that I might see wrong is that the studs measured 5 1/2" long from the edge of the block to where the thread ends on the stud. I don't want to take any chances of the nut tightening on the shoulder of the stud before it torques the head down. What can be done to solve this potential problem? I plan on putting new studs back in it. Would unstyled G studs be better or would the overall length be too short? Thanks for the help.

Brandon

I am on my second G head and I have had as much as.250 taken off till the mill was touching the eyebrow. This really helps too.Get you a tap and thread the studs a little more down on them.My previous G fit ok but I had to shorten the pushrods due to them being too long.Later,"53 G in Tennessee".

Brandon, the 5.75" sounds about right. I used old style studs on a head that I had shaved about .050 to clean up some pitting. There is adequate nut thread engagement, but barely. Since I'm not a puller ( more like a hacker), and just use it to plow and recall good old days with, I figure I'm okay with the 4+ thread engagement I am getting (my recollection is that full joint strength is obtained if you have a 3 full thread engagement). I would consider going to a local Caterpillar dealer and getting studs there as I know they have some mid-length studs that will do the trick. Be prepared for the $$$ though.

Happy Thanksgiving to all,
Rob
