Peter, the distributor cap doesnt affect timing per se as you asked. Timing (as far as when the coil fires) is affected by rotating the distributor so the points open sooner (advance) or later (retard). The coil will fire even with no cap in place, when the points are closed conducting then open up. The caps job is to have the correct plug wire terminal lined up with the internal rotor tip WHEN THE POINTS OPEN TO FIRE THE COIL. The distributor cap has to be a match for the rotor, so when the points open to fire the coil, the rotor tip is in line with the correct plugs output terminal. Bottom line answer, therefore, is NO the wrong cap dont affect timing regarding when the points open to fire the coil, HOWEVER, you need the correct cap matched with the internal rotor which is in line with the plugs terminal when its supposed to be firing. Hope this helps and have a safe blessed and Happy Thanksgiving. My wife has the smoked turkey ready to take to the in laws, but Im snitching at the dark meat pieces as fast as she puts them in the dish lol. Ol John T

Peter, I didn't know an "M" cap would even fit.
~The internal distributor contacts for the towers MUST line up with the rotor side contact when the points open for that cylinder. You can't always tell by looking at a cap if the internal contacts are in line with the external towers. The big thing to look at when swapping cap types is the relation of the internal contacts to the cap indexing notch or locating clip.
~ In most cases there is no difference between the top & side tower cap as long a the insides are the same. The side tower cap was used to point the wires in the correct direction so they didn't stick out as far.
~There is a difference in rotors & some use two side contacts & others use a single. That can make a difference in how & when the rotor lines up with the cap tower contacts.
~Probably what you want to do is pull the cap & L/H spark plug, then turn the flywheel until the L/H cylinder starts to make compression, then keep turning & watch the points to see when they JUST start to open, at that time the (or a) rotor contact should be lining up with a L/H side plug wire tower in the cap [hold the cap over the distributor to line it up & see], then turn the flywheel 180 & watch for the points to open again, at that time the (or a) rotor contact should line up with the cap tower for the R/H wire..
