520 is running again--so far

Went to do the tests that John T and Clooney suggested. Started at the coil and had voltage on both sides. Just for grins, I decided to see if she would start. The old 520 popped right off!! I drove her home and she is now sitting all snug in the shed. I read on the tip of the day, that if the tractor starts up fine then dies suddenly when warm that it could be the condensor. Does that sound right to you guys? Again thanks to Clooney and John T for your help.

Butch, to start right up but die when warm is a problem that could be condensor or coil related. Other thigns in the ignition circuit that heat could affect, are the points, ballast resistor, and ignition switch. As you know, heat causes metal objects to expand and increases electrical resistance, so any or all those item could be suspect. As far as ease to change and low cost, I would start with points and condensor, if that doesnt cure it a ballast resistor (try to jump around it first), and then maybe last the switch (or cheaper to just jump wire around it to see if thats axctually the problem). A coil can also heat up and develop problems, especially if theres no ballast present where one ought to be. Happy Thanksgiving John T

Butch, it could be a bad condenser but that rarely happens. They are usually either good or bad with little in between. I have been involved with auto & tractor ignition systems for a good many years & can count the number of bad condensers I have found using my fingers. ~Make sure the coil is wired correctly [the coil terminal going to the distributor should be the same as the battery ground]. If that is wrong it could cause coil overheating. ~You could also have a failing ballast resistor or intermittent open in the wire from the ign switch to the ballast resistor, or resistor to the coil. You could even have an ignition switch starting to fail..... [if it stops again check for voltage at the coil right then].
~If nothing else is found, or as a preventive measure you might install new points & condenser just to take that out of the equation....
