I have a new gasket and baffle for my radiator cap on an Unstyled A. My question is, what is the proper adhesive for gluing the gasket to the cap, or is it glued at all?

Thanks,

Joe Lee

Joe, as far as I know it was never glued. ~I hate those coming apart every time the cap is removed so I use 3-M super weather strip adhesive to glue the gasket to the cap on all of mine...

Do you have any suggestions on a sealer or adhesive when putting back together a John Deere radiator - the sides, top and bottom.
Would a sealer or adhesive in addition to gaskets be of any benefit ?

PS, yes I always use a sealer. While #3 [aviation grade] Permatex will work in most cases if there are deep pits or other imperfections I have found that LocTite 518 gasket reinforcement works better for a permanent & lasting gasket sealer. One problem I have found when using the Permatex is it will ooze through the paint when the radiator goes through a few heating & cooling cycles...

No. 3 Permatex is good stuff to use. It is about the same as the old "gasket shellac" mentioned in the older manuals. I believe it's also called aviation gasket material. I used it on my model 50's radiator and power steering pump. No leaks so far (2 yrs ago or so).

Around here, no one knows what permetex # 3 is, nor do the auto parts stores sell it. It's now labeled "Aviation gasket" sealant. One helpful, but young, clerk at NAPA called Permetex. They told him there was no more #3 marketed.

The last time I ordered Permatex #3 was July of 2000 and it was available in 1/4 pint and 1 pint cans. That was from McMaster-Carr Supply of Elmhurst, IL. Sales phone is 630-833-0300. I've never tried to buy it from a local auto parts store. If anyone has the McMaster-Carr catalog 104 it's on page 2764 and the Loctite 518 material Clooney mentioned is on the same page. Loctite material appears to be considerably more expensive.
