I am looking at a JD 5410 to do work around my place with and they seem like a decent tractor. But, I would really like to use one of the older tractors with real steel hoods, fenders and etc but I have a lot of hills that I travel and bush hog (10' bush hog) on so I wonder if the 3020/2520 tractors would be too high centered for my use. They sure seem to be built a lot higher but without one around here to study it's hard to compare. So, how do you think a 3020/2520 would compare to a 5410 as a utility, mowing tractor on somewhat hilly ground?

Go with the 5410. Speaking from behind a parts counter, the parts for a 5410 are about half as much as original 3020/2520 parts, IF they are available. A very large portion of parts for the older 10/20 series tractors are no longer available and obsolete. Besides that, you local dealer should be able to get parts for a 5410 next day if the need arises. Also they're a little more depedable.

The 3020 and the 5410 are similar in the hp range.
Advantages to the 3020.
1-heavy, 2-holds it's value, good if it has the
wide front end.
Disadvantages to the 3020
1-30+ years old, 2 expensive, 3 if it has narrow
front end.
Advantages to the 5410
1-newer, 2, true utility tractor, 3 if it has mfwd
Disadvantages to the 5410
1 light weight, 2 resale value, 3 2wd.

The 5410 can be made better for hillsides.
1 cast rear wheel centers, 2 axle extentions
I would highly recommend the MFWD for it.
A real plus if it had the 12x12 power reverser
transmission

If it's really hilly, make sure you load the tires for weight, add on weights will help too. Most people like the security of wide frontends, they can get you in trouble. All tractors will roll, wide or narrow, get a rollguard.
The difference between 3020 and 2520 is 7-8 HP and that's about all.The real difference is price, a good 3020 is selling for 2/3's what a good 2520 sells for, because the 2520,s are rarer.A 2520 will probably do what you need, but 3020 is cheaper and easier to get used parts for.

There were a few wheatland/standard chassis 3020's out there but most were the taller rowcrops. There are side hills where my father would plough with the 70D's standard furrow wheel on the low side. On the same hill he would only chisel plough with the 3020.

We have or had a 3010, 2520, and 5400. We traded the 5400 in for a 6400. The 5400 had a loader and did not have a heavy enough clutch to handle the load we put on it. The only advantage the 5400 had over the other tractors is it had MFWD. That made it a very handy tractor. Of the three, the one I like best is the 2520. It is a great all around tractor. The added HP of the 3020 would be nice though.

Definately a 3020. Set the tread out to 88", get a roll bar and you are set. Even though the tractor seems tall the weight is not all that tall and the extra width will compensate for the height. Also you will have something that will not depreciate out 50% the minute you turn the engine over....it may even appreciate in value.
The 5410 is nice but it has a narrow tread width and it can still roll.

Mark, That's what had me wondering. The seat is a lot higher on the 3020/2520 but the actual mass of the tractor isn't that high compared to the 5410's. It may be an optical illusion that the center of gravity is much higher on these older models because of the seat position.

3020 would be better. and if it does not have roll bar then get one for it.

Do you mean the 3020 would be better than the 5410 stability wise? I agree with getting a roll bar for which ever model I chose.

I have used a 3010 same as 3020 when I grow up on farm. Most for Mowing with a 8 foot mower and pull pipe wagow and hay wagon. it's real nice tractor it has W/front. yeah it seem to feel high but it's fine. I just turn it in for a 4000 that I have right now a bit bigger with more hp than 3010, it has cab on it but sometime thinking about talking it off just have not done it think still need cab that I still use it out in cold weather and helps keep me cool when hot out.
check out my page shows 4000 there. I dont know about the 5410 sure. see what others say.

The 5410 would probably turn over faster than
a 3020.The 3020 is a wider tractor.Any tractor
can turn over it depends on the operator.a lot
of people worry over nothing,There's a lot of narrow front tractors used in the hills for 40
years with no problems. The problem is usually
the yuppie on the seat. There's been a couple
people killed on compact tractors around here
in the last year, both had all the safety
equipment,roll bar,seat belt etc,but still
managed to roll over and get killed,it's all
the operator.
