Did some letter series come from factory without a decal for the model letter?

If you're talking about the circular letter that was on the hood of the tractors, that did not start until the late styled versions of the A, B and G came out. These had the square seat with the batteries under, the pressed steel frame (on the A & B), etc. I assume the D acquired the circular letter at the same time, and all the new ones (M family, R) had them.

Prior to that, the model designation was on the seat channel, readable top to bottom from the right side of the tractor. Unstyled had the designation on the gasoline tank, I think.

Clyde,

Thanks for the reply - I was not aware of that fact. According to an article in the July 1997 Green Magazine, the model designation was moved from the back of the starting tank to the seat channel in mid-1935 - not sure on the serial number, though. Your A is a '36, isn't it?

Green Magazine prints material that isn't always right and if the errors are pointed out to them they ignore you. Try Two-Cylinder magazine - the occassional error they make is always acknowledged when pointed out and a correction mentioned in their letters column.
