Did I fry my A??

Had the battery out of my A last weekend, then put it back in and ran the tractor about half an hour. Went out to start it yesterday and it would barely turn over. Went to hook up the charger to the battery and found that it was in backwards, with neg ground. Charged it up, put the cables back on correctly, and started it up. In the past, the ammeter has always wiggled between zero and just above zero, and jumped considerably into the "charge" zone if I turned the lights on. Now it's wiggling between zero and just below zero, and falls well into the "discharge" zone if I turn the lights on. Did I damage something hooking the battery up backwards?

Bob, I sure agree theoretically, hooking the battery wrong shouldnt have hurt the generator or voltage regulator. If after you re-polarize her as clooney stated, and the ammeter still shows discharge, try to short the field wire out of the generator dead to ground when shes running and observe if the ammteter then goes to charge. If so, perhaps the VR (if it was repolarized) was damaged after all or a wire got messed up somewhere. Let us know. Ol John T

Bob, probably not. You might have to re-polarize the generator though. ~Look on the voltage regulator & see if you can identify the [BAT] terminal & the [GEN] terminal, the [GEN] terminal might alternately be labeled [A] or [ARM] & will have a wire going to the [A] post {larger of the two} on the generator. If you can POSITIVELY identify the terminals, just momentarily hook a wire from the [BAT] to the [GEN or A] terminal & if you see small spark it is polarized.
~If you can't identify the terminals on the regulator then just run a long wire from the battery un-grounded post to the [A] post on the generator {larger of the two} & if you see a spark you're done. CAUTION: do not ever jump power to the [F] post on the generator or [F] terminal on the regulator or sever regulator damage can result.
~If after polarizing the generator it still doesn't charge correctly just post back for farther directions on testing the generator system...

Tried repolarizing the generator by grounding the F terminal and jumping from battery to A terminal on generator. No change: still discharges when running with lights on.

Bob, looks like the bottom short line is, if the generators frame is properly grounded, and you ground the field wire terminal post to ground (that defeats any bad Voltage Regulator Field control circuit), and the Arm/Gen and Bat terminals on the Voltage Regulator are connected (that defeats any bad cutout relay) with the tractor running, and you still dont get a charge at the ammeter (assuming the ammeter is okay) and its (other end) connected to the batterys ungrounded terminal, and the system is polarized, the generator is likely bad. If it fails these tests plus clooneys described motor test, its almost surely bad. Let us know and Good luck, Ol John T

Bob, ok, next try running the tractor at WOT & jumping the [F] post to ground, if it charges you have a bad regulator ground, open in the [F] wire, or bad regulator. If it doesn't charge make sure you have battery voltage at the [BAT] terminal at the regulator [if not find out why] then with the [F] post still grounded jump the [BAT] terminal to the [GEN or A] terminal at the regulator, if it charges now you have a bad regulator or incorrect polarization. If it still doesn't charge jump a wire from the regulator [BAT] terminal to the generator [A] post, if still no charge you probably have a bad generator. To test, remove the fan belt & both wires from the generator, then run battery power from the [BAT] terminal on the regulator to the generator [A] post, the generator should motor, then ground the [F] post, the generator should slow down. If it doesn't motor you have a brush, armature, or internal connection problem. If it motors & doesn't slow down you have field problems or brush problems or internal connection problem.. ~Try the above & post back with questions....
