I know this has probably been answered many times before but maybe someone can help me out so I won't have to search the archives. How many marks to the left of center should the advance be set for a Wico mag for a 29 Model D? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

The mag is a base mounted Wico and does not have the adjustable timing feature.

Dick, I don't have much information on that, I presume AX mag. I would be guessing if I gave you an impulse stop setting. Try E-Mailing Bill Lopoulos {[email protected]}, give him the mag type [Wico X base mount] & application [29D], tell him the impulse drive cup number [e.g._4702], & you would like to run [XX of timing, I would say somewhere around 25-30BTDC]
~If you can't get any usable information, post back or E-Mail me & we can use the flywheel impulse & an added flywheel advance mark to make the impulse & running timing do what you need.

Clooney, the impulse stop setting is presently set at 2 1/2 marks left of center. Will this give me the 25 deg advance while running. How many deg of advance is each mark? From what I understand the timing should be advanced 25 - 30 deg for best running conditions. Thanks to you and John T for your responses.

Dick, I would guess 2-1/2 left of center would be 25 & 3-1/2 left of center for 30. But this assumes the center mark is 12-1/2 & the drive cup isn't a 25 cup. I can't confirm that on your base mount. What is your drive cup number?
~In any case if you want to initially guess at it then dynamically check it when running [that is the way I check it] , set it to either 2-1/2 or 3-1/2 marks left of center [2-1/2 = 25 & 3-1/2 = 30], then measure the OD of your flywheel & send it to me [probably is somewhere around 74-5/8"]. You will also have to set the initial lag setting [mag drive coupling position] so the impulse snaps when the L/H impulse mark on the flywheel aligns with the case mark. If you furnish the flywheel OD in inches I will give you the distance from the L/H impulse mark so you can put a paint timing line or lines at 25 & 30, then check it with a timing light when running....

I think the correct police mags on the 29 were the base mount Edison Splitdorf or the Dixie with the adjustable timing lever to retard to start and advance to run. The Clooney man, as stated below, has the settings for the different types of Wicos I believe. Ol John T

Dick, what model Wico are you working with. The original 29 D had an [operator adjustable timing] mag using the short lever next to the throttle control. Are you using a fixed lag angle mag? If using a fixed lag angle mag what timing do you want to run.
