Here is where I'm at now: Went this morning & bought a new 6v battery (only 450 cca was available) told the man to make sure it was up good, he checked and said it was. Put it on and re-polarized the VR. Battery just would not turn it fast enough to start (remember a rebuilt engine and is fairly tight) so I rolled it off and started right up---same thing on amp gage, no charge--SO I hooked the F post on the generator to ground, WOW, now it is charging 10 amps. So I have a new VR coming in the morning. Maybe I fried the new one with the 8 volts? Or maybe it had been sold before I got it and someone tried it out? But I sure loved the way it started and ran on the 8 volts, don't seem to run as good on the 6 volts, has a sputter about every 30 seconds at 1/2 throttle.

Wayne, 8 volts won't hurt a regulator, unless it was shorted directly to the field terminal. You might want to hook the field wire back up to the generator then short the [F] wire to ground at the regulator, if it charges then you more than likely have a bad regulator. If it doesn't, the field wire is open between the regulator & generator.
~That battery you got is about all that's reasonably available that will fit in the small 420 battery tray. If the cables are good & the correct size you are left with a faulty starter or a tight engine.
~If you like the 8 volt battery you can always set the regulator up to charge it. I have mixed feelings on an 8 volt battery. They do crank much better than the 6 volter & the spark is better at cranking & low RPM's. The problem is setting the charging system up to charge the darn thing. I much prefer a 12 volt battery & install a 12 volt generator, 12 volt regulator & 12-14 volt lights & a hidden ballast resistor. It will always start no matter how cold, the lights will last longer, & the sealed 12 volt batteries don't spit acid all over the battery tray area, & unless someone opens the battery door no one can tell. [until you hit the starter switch]..... .....

Yep, that old ground the field trick shows when you have a bad VR as you obviously did, unless a wire is not on the right place somewhere??? I would have bought a bigger heavier CCA 6 volter myself. It sounds like now you may be able to get her all fixed and working at 6 volts, but with a good heavy battery, 00 Gauge Cables and a good starter motor, she should crank betetr than you described. You may want to have the starter load checked at a shop now or you may go the 8 volt route which clooney seems to like. If so, remember the new VR has to be set up, and the points will burn out a lil quicker unless you ballast her slightly, and the bulbs will be brighter but not last as long. Have that starter checked out and maybe that will cure its slow cranking, assuming you have a heavy battery and good connections and grounds and 00 Gauge Cables. Ol John T
