Well i have been working on this H for about two months now and i cant seem to get it to start by hand. The only time i have gotten it to start is by pulling it off or giving it a small shot of starting fluid. Well i know it is getting fire to the plugs and it has new plugs and wires and a carberator kit in it. Someone told me i am not going to get it started by hand untill i get the carb set just right. I dont know how tempromental that these tractors are. But i have spent many many hours on it and i cant even get it to act like it wants to start. I also have a friend that has an H and the bragging on how easy his starts by hand is starting to get to me. So does anyone have any other suggestions on what might be wrong with it.

Justin, there are so many things that could be going on, its a little tough over the net to give you one simple answer. One problem in a tractor that wont hand start but starts good and runs fine if you pull her, is a weak mag spring. I would remove both plugs but have their wires connected and the plug (not wire shorted though)layign on the frame and crank her over and observe if u have a good blue spark at each plug. If not, it could be a weak spring or bad points or condensor or wires etc etc among several other things. I would adjust the carb by pull startign and then tweakin her till she runs ok and idles slow n smooth. Try and verify the spark at each removed plug and maybe tell us more and we can proceed from there. Also, after several cranks and she dont start, remove the plugs and see if they are wet or dry. How much choke are you using at hand crank?? This sort of info will help us try and determine if its a fuel or ignition problem maybe. Let us know and Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff

I have a nice blue spark with my plugs. I just put new points in the mag. And i am choking it about half to all the way closed. But the problem i have is that it doesnt act like it wants to start at all. I mean it is not that big of a deal right now but could it just be one of those restoration things. LOL I think that i am wanting more out of it that i should. But im working on it.

Justin, do an initial setting on the carb; set the idle screw [farthest from the center of the tractor] to 2 turns out from seated & set the load screw [closest to the center of the tractor] to 1 turn out from seated. If the carb is good that should be pretty close for a good hand start.
~I presume you have a DLTX 26 or 46 on it? If so make sure the choke plate has the spring loaded trap door in it & it is closing, & opens toward the inside of the carb, those things have a habit of being missing.
~Try different choke & throttle settings; My H's start best at 1/4 or less throttle [actually throttle plate lever just off the stop pin] & full choke for 1-2 turns, then 7/8 choke for the next turn, then 1/2 for the next [if needed], then if no start try wide open throttle & no coke, if it barks there go back to 3/4 coke & 1/2 throttle.
~Do a cold compression check, & if below 60-65 or so try some 2-cycle oil in the gas to help seal the rings at cranking speeds.
~If you live in a cold climate, get rid of your summer gas & put in winter gas [don't laugh there is a difference].
~I have found on mine that opening the plug gap to .040" helps the starting as well as advancing the timing to 1/2" before L/H impulse lines up with case mark.
~If you are using 388 spark plugs, in cold whether try Champion D-23 with 2 plug gaskets under each plug. I have found they start better when it's real cold. In warmer whether it doesn't seem to make any difference on the plug make.
~In real cold whether try opening the idle needle 1/2 turn more [just for starting].
~When stopping the tractor, run it out of fuel, don't choke it or stall it.

Justin, if you have a nice blue spark at the plugs at hand cranking, the mag and spring is likely decent shape. Next thing is choke and try several hand starts, then remove plugs to see if wet (maybe flooded too much fuel or choking) or totally dry (needs more fuel or choke). Do you think you have the timing about right???? How does it run and sound after pull starts?? Any black or blue smoke out the stack??? Sorry, Im all questions and no answers yet lol Ol John T
