I was out with my buddies 60 today running a bush hog on some corn stubble and while it ran very good under load, we could not idle back to a reasonable rpm. The linkage was set ok, the throttle stop was adjusted all the way back for minimum rpm , govenor linkage ok.

It appears something is wrong inside the carb but would appreciate any imput from you before we tear into it.

Donwisc, the loose throttle plate screws that Ken talks of is a possibility, but that usually keeps the throttle lever from returning to the stop. It is still something you should look at. If the screws are tight, hold the carb up to a strong light & look for light around the closed throttle plates.
~A manifold or other intake leak is another possibility.
~Another thing to look at is the possibility of gasoline in the crankcase from a leaking fuel shut-off diaphragm. [the gas fumes along with crankcase air can enter the combustion chamber through the rings & intake valve guides] ~Grab the throttle linkage by hand hold it at the throttle stop to see if you can force it to idle down, if so suspect governor linkage or hand throttle stop adjustment.

If all the linkages are ok, could be the little screws in the throttle shaft that holds the plates on the shaft. One side may have came loose and is fouling when trying to close. Might check the gasket between the intake and carb. for air leak. Just some ideas, Ken.
