My 720 lp has gotten to where it will not go into 1st or 3rd gear. All other gears will work but can not get the shifter to go into the 1 and 3 slots. Took the top off and did'nt see anything out of place but maybe someone else as had the same problem. Any info is appreciated, thanks Ken.

Ken, does the shift lever hang up, or does it go in the slot & the gears just don't engage?

Ken, I guess I didn't read it fully the first time. The second time it sank in..
~What I have found on some 720's with 1-3 shifting hang up [without the optional 3rd-5th gear set] is the detent plunger [will be a bolt on top of the crankcase on the R/H side, & be the rearmost of the two bolts] gets rust in the hole around the spring & plunger making the plunger hard to lift out of the shift shaft detent notch. If that's the problem, the good news is you can get to it without pulling anything apart, the bad news is if it is the problem & rusted it is a bugger to get out of the hole [after you remove the cap bolt] . If that is the problem you will probably have problems getting the spring out of the hole to get the detent plunger out to clean it. Sometimes you can put penetrating oil in the hole & get the spring to loosen up.
~If that isn't the problem then you could have sliding gear problems on the L/H side or shift lever line up problems inside. I'm betting on the detent plunger though.
~If you can't find that detent plunger cover bolt or don't understand the detent position just E-Mail me for a parts breakdown.....

Thanks Clooney, I saw the bolt you are talking about. I don,t see any thing out of line, so you are probably right on the plunger, because it gradually got worse.I'll see tomorrow. Thanks again, Ken.
