We are just finishing a LA that we recently bought and noticed that the front pully was really loose. Thinking we could just put a bushing in it and go on we found out that the shaft is tapered. The way we check it it seems to have a taper of about 1 degree per side or 2 degrees total. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Thanks!

What you have seems to be a common problem. the crank shaft is supposed to be straight, not tapered. the pulley has worn the crank.the only options are to have it welded and turned back to standard, or you could try a bushing. It doesn't sound like yours is worn that bad, so you might be able to get by with just putting a good pulley on it. alot of people leave them loose if it is an electric start tractor.

no prob on the replies. Mine did the same thing this afternoon and I got griped at for posting twice .Oh well:) thanks for the info though, looks like we might get to take it out and fix it then. Luckily My dad and I own a machine shop so that part of it is easy.

Of course it might be just as easy to put the hand crank motor back in it since the pulley on it is tight. As long as I can get my son to do the cranking I don't see a problem with this..LOL!!!

Thanks for the info!!!
