when the clutch is engaged and the pulley stops i put it in gear. when i let out the clutch it releases the pulley which drives the tractor. when parked i tried to measure the throw when released from the pulley, but it seems like it is not releasing all the way. a small portion of the pad seems to be on the pulley. the touching piece is right up close to the pivot side. when i move the pad by hand i can get daylight between the pulley an pad. would i just neeed to tighten the clutch? or i know the pad is worn down to a 1/8 inch thickness, would this have something to do with it?

Don, you are talking two different things here. The clutch is on the inside of the pulley & engages to drive the pulley.
~That pad on the front of the pulley is the pulley brake & is used to stop the pulley from spinning when you pull the hand lever all the way back so you can shift the trans.
~That brake on the front of the pulley should have a small spring between it & the fork bearing [that's the cover on the front that is held on with 4 bolts] & that spring should move the brake away from the pulley when the clutch is engaged. ~It sounds like either the brake needs adjusting, or the spring is gone or weak , or the brake arm is worn & allowing the brake pad to drop down low on the pulley...

you are right the brake pad is still touching the pulley when let out. what should the tolerence be between the two? or should it eyeballed as pulled away. the pad is worn to almost nothing and the lever will lock in both directions. will check spring in morning.

Don, I told you wrong on that spring. There isn't one on your "B". I guess I should stay away from a computer after 11pm. For some undetermined reason I was thinking of a J.D. 50. when I wrote the above.
~On your "B", that brake arm just floats along out there. There is nothing mechanical to make the brake clear the pulley when the clutch is engaged. ~On some, that arm will stay with the fork shaft & the brake will clear the pulley by a fair amount when the clutch is engaged & on others it will just lightly touch the pulley when the clutch is engaged.
~The proper brake adjustment is [there isn't anything you can actually measure] that the pulley brake can stop the pulley from turning when the hand lever is pulled all the way to the rear [& held] & will allow the pulley to spin as the lever is moved forward before the clutch starts to engage.
~Once there is wear on the brake arm pivot hole & the top of the fork shaft bearing the brake arm will wobble & be low on the pulley & in a lot of cases won't clear the pulley by much with the clutch engaged.....
