By no means am I causing trouble, but I found it interesting that I had to pull my neighbor's 4020 out of a field last week because of lack of traction. My G1000 Vista LP Gas MM got him right out. I was just wondering why those tractors were built that light, cause my Moline goes through similar fields with no traction problems. We both pull Oliver 4-16" plows. Thanks to any replies:)

Maye tractors cost by the pound to manufacture and sell by the horsepower. Maybe Deere's still in business and MM isn't!

Find me a running G1000 with 13,000 hours on it and I will find you many 4020's with 13,000 hours that are still running.

I've pulled 4020s out of mud holes also, many times. Occasionally with a two cylinder 620 which was much smaller, much older, and had less than half the horsepower as the 4020 or what ever tractor that was in distress.HJ

I guess the bottom line to me is that the 4020 should be worth $10,000 or better, the G1000 would be lucky to bring $3000. Also which there is still alot more 4020's still in the fields than G1000's were ever made.

4020
95 PTO HP
84 DRAWBAR HP
WEIGHT 8615

G1000
111 PTO HP
100 DRAWBAR HP
WEIGHT 10675

ACCORDING TO TRACTORTIPS.COM
LOOKS LIKE TO ME YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PULL MORE THAN A 4 BOTTOM PLOW.

I was thinking the same thing. The G1000 should pull more then 4 bottoms.

I suppose it depends on your soil conditions. The 4020s were always sdvertised as 5 plow tractors but in our Missouri River bottom Gumbo, 4-16s were a pretty fair load for our 4020 diesels. We only pulled 5-18s with our 5020 and 4620. But we traveled in 4th gear most the time, some spots we had to drop down to 3rd.HJ

New Generation Deere tractors were built to have a high horsepower-to-weight ratio, not a high weight-to-horsepower ratio. Unless you're in a situation where absolute traction is a must and you ballast to the nines, extra weight is a hindrance and not a help, and is merely a waste of fuel, pulling power, and causes excessive powertrain loading and wear. Every additional pound on the tractor itself takes away from the amount you can pull. As long as there is sufficient ballast to put the power to the ground, that is all that is required. I assume that your MM is probably heavier than his 4020, and if his was mired in at all, it's obviously going to have more trouble pulling itself out than yours will to pull it out. It all comes down to simple physics.

Really can't say one occurince means much. I've pulled my 4020 out mud hole with my Ford 250 SD, and have pulled my Ford 250 SD out with my 4020.
Also have pulled them both out with my Ford 850. All it proves is I get stuck a lot.

James, how were the condition? tire size? ballast? I know my Deere's but not sure on a MM, but isn't a G1000 a pretty overall heavy tractor? More like a 5010 JD. Then it's fair to compare if it's not apples to apples. Brad

i drove through our waterway 6 times in the same spot and never got stuck until the last time. So you cant just compare similar fields because it will be different everytime.

I'll have to agree. It is often a lot about maybes. I can recall once when we pulled our A JD out of a soft spot with the H JD. It was probably a traction issue. Although, I don't know much about the weight distribution and power ratios for the 4020 so I'll have to leave that to a more knowledgeable person.

I believe it is a matter of knowing how " to hold your mouth--Just Right"...!!! I once pull-started an Oliver "88" with a press drill IN the ground---with my JD "B"...probably was lucky to move him, but HE will never forget it..!! That Big MM is probably bigger than that 4020....!!!! Just backing in, to the 4020, and having clean tires makes a big difference, too...!! I hate it, when the tires get all balled-up.....!!!
