I am very interested in the big diesel 2 lungers now that my neighbor bought a 820 black dash and I am around it all the time. What I want to know is about some of it's capabilities. For instance how does it rank up against a 4020, that I use all the time,in regards to pulling power, and the hydrolic system? Are the brakes good enough to stop heavy ensalage wagons,5000 pound wagon with 14-16 thousand pounds of Corn? I have the 4020 weighted to 9500 and if I take my time it does very well. Also if the breaks are set on a grade, do they hold well? Has anyone ever made hay with one of these monsters? if so will there PTO speeds run a discbine and a square baler well? I've never done any actual farming with a 2 cylinder, with the exception of raking hay, and sicklebaring pasture and this was just an old A. I am interested in getting one of the big standards to hobbie farm with, primarily as a 4 ton toy, and was just curious about their potential. Write back and let me know what you all have experienced. Thanks Greg H.

Agree withn G Taylors comments 100 percent. They were designed for big fields and headlands. They are fun to run but I would hate to handle big wagons with the brakes on a 830 unless you are a flatlander with a lot of room.

The 95HP 4020 will walk all over the 75HP blackdash 820 or 830 with it's 27% more power and greater gear selection. The two cylinder is fine for pulling a plough, belt work or baling in a very long flat field in good weather. The 4020 wins everywhere else except fuel efficiency. Then again a PROPERLY tuned 4020 gas or diesel isn't a fuel hog either. Driving a R,80,820,830 or 840 is like sailing a Great Lakes freighter while standing at the stern. The 4020 handles like a well designed bass boat. It's just that those smart old Deere engineers made the two cylinder diesels so incredibly efficient. Compared to anything else for 11 years of production and 26 years afterwards everything else looked thirsty.

Having worked both, 830's may be fun to play with. But they don't even start to come close to an average 4020.
I agree at low speeds lugging power is remarkable with the big two cylinders. But stopping and parking on hills with a load of chop would be dangerous.Take one to the field and work it for 10 or 12 hours the fun goes out of it real quick.
Pulling a smale square baler is no problem.Pulling a 10' discbine in good hay an 830 can't keep up ground speed to keep hay flowing through without choking up.Sorry I'd stick with a good 4020 with an airconditioned cab.

i have seen a 730 out pull a 3020. 820 or 830 will have much more lugging ability and torque!

An old timer near me had a 830. He tried out the 4020 but didn't like. Went back to the 830.
